'Washington, June 6. Dnrely over
five feet in height, Philander Chase
Knox, senator from Pennsylvania
and former attorney general of the
United States, Is, physically speaking,
the most dlmunltlve candidate for
the presidency that the country has
ever seen. But short as he Is In stat
ure, he Is long In Intellect.
There are other superlative adjec
tives that might be applied. For In
stance, he is the richest of all the re
publican candidates, the dreslest, the
most reserved and the sportiest. He
owns some of the best blooded horses
In America. He has earned the big
gest fees for defending corporations,
and he was the first attorney general
to find and make use of an effective
weapon to prosecute them. He Is
also the baldent of all the candidates
and the only one that Is smooth shav
en.
Knox likes the company of young
men. At his house almost every eve
ning there Is a pinochle or billiard
gume in progress In which the sena
tor and some youngsters of his ac
quaintance are the participants.
When he finds a young man display
ing marked ability In nny line of
work, he is very opt to extend a help
ing hand. It was thus that Milton
D. Purdy, sometimes referred to as
as the "trust buster" of the adminis
tration, came Into notice, Knox met
him when In Minnesota In connection
with the Northern Securities case,
when Purdy hod Just begun to climb
the legal ladder. Knox was attracted
to him and his work, and when the
law was passed authorizing the de
partment of Justice to employ special
assistant attorneys general, he sent
for Purdy and gave him one of the
Jobs. That Purdy has made good Is a
tribute to Knox's discriminating Judg
ment of men. v
Knox Is sensitive.- Some years ago
he entered at the New York horse
show a pair of blooded horses that
had pedigrees reaching back to the
Dark Ages, and which to his mind, as
an expert, was the finest matched
team of trotting horses In America.
The prizes, however, went to horses
of New York's social favorites and
Knox's pair received no mention. He
has never exhibited there since.
Kxim-IIm1 IVnm Colleffi'.
Ho owes his promlnonce partly to
the fact that he was once expelled
from the West Virginia University
for a boyish prank. One of the rules
of the faculty was that no students
should attend theatricals. One day
a company playing "East Lynne"
came along and Knox, together with
about 20 fellow students, decided to
see the performance. " One of the pro
fessors, sent to take the names of the
offenders, reported them, and all
were sentenced to expulsion. Eigh
teen were reinstated on signing an
agreement not to offend again, but
Knox and one other left.
He then went to Mt. Union College,
Alliance, Ohio, and It was there that
he first met William McKlnley, Jr.
Undecided as to the profession he
would adopt, It was entirely due to
McKlnley that he finally resolved to
become a lawyer. But for that meet
ing, Knox might now be a bank cash
ier In a country town, like his father.
A close student, esupeclally of
cases In which he was Interested, and
with a fjne capacity for resolving ab
struse statements of the law into
concise and lucid language under
standable even by laymen, Knox sut.
ceeded In his profession from the
start. In the earlier days of An
drew Carnegie he became the Iron
master's lawyer and received, It I
said, an Income of 150,000 a year from
this source alone.
$90,000 a Year.
In the 20 years following his res
ignation In 1876 as assistant United
States attorney for the western dis
trict of Pennsylvania, a place that ho
held for only one year, his personal
retainers averaged $90,000 a year,
These, with his Interest in the other
business of his firm, gave him an In
come of about $150,000 a year, and
he came to be recognized as one of
the most successful corporation law
yers in the country. Incidentally he
became . a stockholder In the U. S
Steel corporation, the Union Trust
compuny, the Pittsburg Bessemer and
Luke Erie Hallway Co., and other
powerful corporations. His largest
single fee was earned In a 45-mtnute
speech in opposition to, an attempt
to abrogate the charter and limit the
franchises of the Indianapolis Street
Car company. He received $125,000
for that piece of work. His associate,
the late ex-President Benjamin Har
rlson addressed the court for four
hours and received only $50,000.
It Is related of Knox's early career
that when he had a particularly puz
zling question to elucidate, he would
sally forth with a law book under
one arm and fishing tackle under the
other and hie him to some, favorite
stream. When he returned In the
evening he generally had a string of
fish and the solution of his problem
as well.
Perhaps because he knew from the
Inside how the federal laws were be
ing violated, but more likely because
he realized that the principal duty
attached to his office was to prose
cute such violations, Knox quickly
became active In the enforcement of
the Sherman anti-trust law, when
McKlnley appointed him attorney
general In 1901. He was firmly con
vlnced that combinations that stifled
competition and restrained Inter
state commerce were evil and, after
hard and laborious effort, he got to
gether the necessary evidence and
sued the Northern Securities Co. He
was upheld by the supreme court of
the United. States In his contention
that this concern was an Illegal com
bination,
Goverimunt Ownership.
He has consistently held that mo
nopolles and combinations, partlcu
larly of railroads, tended surely to
wards government ownership of pub
lic utilities, and he set himself to com
bat that tendency by seeking to give
the people relief under existing laws.
He Instituted proceedings against the
beef trust, the salt trust, the Jack
sonville Wholesale Grocers ' associa
tion, the Cotton Traffic Poo, the An
thracite coal. carrying roads, and many
others, all Involving alleged violations
of the anti-trust and Interstate com
merce laws. It was on his recom
mendation that the law was passed
permitting cases of general Import
ance to be expedited in the supreme
court of the United States.
Knox owns three homes. One Is a
large and beautifully furnished stone
house on Ellsworth avenue, Pittsburg,
set In the midst of well-kept lawns.
His Washington residence Is on K
street, was the former home of
George W. Chllds, and cost the sena
tor $170,000. His country place Is at
Valley Forge, once part of the camp
ing ground used by George Washing
ton, and the headquarters of Gen
eral Knox, the senator's Ulustrous
revolutionary ancestor. Here he
raises all kinds of fine stock.
As much of his time as Is possible
Knox spends In the open. He Is fond
of golf and plays a fair game. He
likes to fish. But his chief delight In
the way of sport Is his horses. These
he likes to drive himself, and other
early risers may frequently see him
speeding a pair of blooded roadsters
through the crisp morning air along
the picturesque roads of Kock Ceek
Park.
Without advertising the fact, Knox
Is a man of generous Impulses. Fol
lowing the great blizzard of 1896 In
Western Pennsylvania, he was called
upon by a representative of a charity
organization for a contribution for
coal and food. Knox handed her a
check, the size of which led the
stai tied .woman to Inquire:
"How do you wish this money V)
be npplled, Mr. Knox?"
"As your organization thinks best,"
was the reply. "There are . worthy
and unworthy poor, I know, but they
pre all cold and hungry."

There has not been a better straw-
bery season for many years. The
oerries are of good size and of extra
fine flavo. The frost did absolutely
no damage to the fruit this vear. and
the yield will be extra large, consid
ering the acreage.
Indians from the several reserva
tions have arrived In large numbers
to harvest the crop, and it is believed
that there will be plenty of pickers
apd packers this season to care prop
erly for the berries.
The Davidson Fruit company and
the Hood River Fruit Growers' union
have practically enough orders on
hand to consume the entire output.
Berries have been poor In California
this year and the dealers have not
been stocking up very heavy, and for
this reason people are good and hun.
