Went, arrested for vagrancy this morn
Ing, to keep blm In peaceful dreams
for a week, says the Wulla Walla Bul
letin. On his person was a bottle of
morphine, a box of cocaine, a couple
of small bottles of a solution of mor
phlne, some Chinese dope, consisting
of burned opium scraped from a pipe,
and a home-made hypodermic syringe
or "gun."
West was arrested about 6:15 this
morning and when lined up In front
of Sergeant Frank Morse at the police
station, with the outfit In front of him,
claimed that he had secured the dope
to smuggle In to Sam Ferris, an old
pal of his doing time In the peniten
tiary for receiving stolen property,
Considering West's previous habits
with the various kinds of dream drugs,
the officers were Inclined to think
that he used some of the stuff himself.
He was released today on a promise to
leave town.

Yardniaster Killed.
J. W. Leak, yardmaster at Starbuck
for the O. R. & X., died last night
from Injuries received earlier, when
he was accidentally run over by a
switch engine, says the Walla Walla
Bulletin. Mr. Leak Is about 50 years
of age and has been yardmaster at
Starbuck for about two years. He
has no relatives In this part of the
country.
After being run over the man was
put on a train anil started for this
city to the hospital, but died before
ho reached Prescott. His left leg
was completely severed at the hip, and
Injuries about the head and body
were sustained. The remains were
brought to this city, and were taken
charge of .by the MacMartin Under
taking company.
Large CatUo Sale.
One of the largest cattle sales made
in thla section in several years waa
closed at Ontario Monday when 3600
head of cattle changed owners, were
loaded on the cars and started for
home ranches of the purchasers, says
the Baker City Democrat. Parson
and Hanley, of Harney valley, were
the seller and J. M. Holt of Miles
City, Mont., and E. G. Gould of Kear
ney, Neb., were the purchasers. Holt
bought 700 head of yearling steers,
paying $17 per head.
Gould took 400 head of 8-year-olds
which he got for $25 per head; 600
at $32 per head; 2000 head of 2-year-
old heifers at $13 per head.
Had Check Man.
G. A. Roy, wanted at Blackfoot for
victimizing a few business men of the
Owe City on the strength of checks
against mythical bank account, was
arrested in this city this morning by
the local police and Is being held to
await the arrival of an officer from
the scene of hi alleged crime, says the
rocatello Tribune. He Is In the city
Jail and takes his arrest stoically and
philosophically. It is asserted that he
caught a well known local hotel keep
er for a neat Bum of money on the
strength of his bad checks.

Miss Mamie Sanderson, alias Fish
er, alias Minnie Moore, alias a few
other pet names common to the under
world. Is an Inmate of the city Jail to
day, having been arrested this morn
ing for shoplifting on complaint of the
Blyth & Fargo store, from which In
stitution she this morning "lifted" a
quantity of dry goods while-the busy
clerks were not looking, says the Po
catello Tribune. She Is to have a

A story which reads like a romance
I." contained In the announcement that
Captain Jack's band of Modoc war
riors will be returned to their native
land In southern Oregon, after an en
forced absence of 30 years.
The Modford Tribune says of the
Matter:
After 30 years of enforced absence,
the small remnant of Captain Jack'a
band of Modoc Indians at the Quapaw
agency In Oklahoma, are to be remov
ed to the Klamath reservation In Ore
gon, where their friends and relatives
live.
This Is the unanimous recommenda
tion of the senate committee en Indi
an affairs In connection with the re
moval of restrictions on the land of
all Indians at the Quapaw agency.
The Modocs remaining In Oklaho
ma are but a mere handful of the
band of 217 lusty Graves who were
taken from the Klamath reservation
to Indian territory In 1874 right
after the Modoc war. Ever since their
arrival In the southwest these Indians
have been longing for their Oregon
home.
Of the 217 only 49 remain and 10
of these have found their way back to
Oregon, leaving only 39. As a matter
of fact only 17 of the Indians original
ly moved are living. There Is a pa
thetic story of genuine homesickness
which has resulted In the depletion
of the band.
The Modocs are thrifty and have
not spent their time In Idleness. They
are extraordinarily good workers and
for years have maintained themselves
solely by their own manual laCor. .
It Is thought by the more progres
sive mixed bloods on ' the Klamath
reservation In Oregon that the coming
of the remnant of Captain Jack's once
warlike band .will have a splendid ef
fect on the entire tribe on the north
Pacific coast.
Hen Hatched Snakes.
Peter Wise had -the surprise of his
life when he pulled a setting, hen off
the nest, says a dispatch from El
wond, Ind. He had noticed the fowl
setting for some time, and suspected
that she was setting on a nest of
spoiled eggs. When he lifted her up
Instead of a brood of chickens there
was a bunch of snakes little, sleek,
black fellows, each wriggling furious
ly.
Mr. Wise promptly aispatcnea me
snakes, 11 In number, and the hen
was disposed of by having her neck
wrung. Mr. Wise had no use for a
hen that could not tell the difference
between snake's eggs and her own.
