expects to celebrate the Fourth of
July as It has never been celebrated
before. The citizens Just held a mass
meeting, an association has been
formed, and committees are now at
work planning for the big day. An
effort will be made to secure excur
slons from Pendleton, and it Is ex
pected that large crowds will come in
from there. Another meeting will.
be held this evening for this purpose,
Rev. Levi Johnson held services In
the local church yesterday.
There will be a grand ball given at
the opera hall on election night. It
has been announced that there will
be no more dances here until that
time.
Wool hauling has been going on
for the past couple of weeks, and
there are now many thousands of
pounds of wool stored In the ware
house for the big sale which will be
held here tomorrow.
A number of the prominent ranch
ers of this section of the country have
been taking In the sights at Seattle.
John P. McManus has been chosen
on the grand Jury in Portland and he
will leave for that city this week.

the Pythian grand lodge at Portland

Mr. and Mrs. Felix Beathe have
gone to Seattle for a visit with rela
tives.
Everybody Is preparing for the big
pioneer picnic which will be held hero
the last of this week.

Hermlston, May 25. Elaborate
preparations are being made for the
celebration of the opening of the
Umatilla project Wednesday. The
committees are hard at work. The
Eagle band of Pendleton has been
secured, and nothing will be left un
done to make the day an enjoyable
one. Mayor Yates and other citizens
will make addresses of welcome.
Judge S. A. Lowell of Pendleton will
be the orator of the day and he will
speak of the early history of the pro
ject. Hon. W. R. King, J. T. Whistler.
D. C. Henny, Hon. H. M. Cake and
others will deliver appropriate ad
dreses for the occasion.
The ladles of the churches are mak
ing preparations to help handle the
crowds expected.
A. E. Robb and wife of New York
city, who are on their return trip to
the east after extensive travels In the
Northwest, have been visiting at the
home of M. Dlchon for a few days.
Dr. J. H. Buck, a prominent dentist
of Chicago, has been here looking over
lands with a view to purchasing. He
is much in favor of the conditions
here.
Born, to Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Gorham
Wednesday. May 20, a daughter.
Col. J. F. MeNaught and wife left
a few days ago for Seattle where they
will visit for a few weeks. Mrs. Me
Naught expects to be away a good
part of the summer and will visit rel
atives in California before returning.
Considerable building Is going on at
Hermlston at this time, and there will (
be a large number of new cottages
erected before fall.
E. C. Palmer, the engineer who will
will locate here, has completed an
office on Gladys avenue, and he will
now be permanently located.

Portland Commercial Club Possesses

An oriental throne sent across the
sea to the Portland Commercial club
as a gift from Captain George Wolff
of Manila has been set up In the club
lounging room and presents a sharp
contrast of the furniture of seml-bar-
barlc nations with that of the most
civilized people on earth, says the
Oregon Daily Journal. The chair has
a flat seat and an Immense flaring
back, and is formed evidently for the
purpose of compelling Its occupant
to "sit up and take notice." It Is
made of Filipino grasses and hemp
Captain Wolff, the donor, Is super
intendent of Philippine prisons, and is
a non-resident member of the Port
land Commercial club. On his last
visit to this city he was given special
entertainment at the club, and his
gift of the chair is to show his ap
preciation. The chair was made at
Bilibld prison, in Manila.
