Pioneer Picnic In Weston Will Be
Event of Season Domestic Science
Class Shows Skill In, Cooking So

Benefit Pioneers.
Weston, May 23. The people of
Weston have turned out to the Cale
donian picnic in great numbers. The
two great events of Weston and Athe
na country are the annual picnics of
the Caledonians at Athena and the
pioneers at this place. Elaborate
preparations are being made for the
latter event here next week, Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday.
The domestic science class of the
Normal tendered a dinner to the rest
of the members Wednesday evening.
The young ladles are proving them
selves adepts in the art of cooking and
the affair was a most pleasant one.

here who are viewing the fleet.
President French of the Normal has
been at Wasco for a few days to of
ficiate as one of the Judges at the
field day declamatory contest of

ed socialist, author and orator, will
speak In Weston the last day of the
pioneers' reunion. May 30.
The Women's Civic Improvement
club of Weston is making great prep
arations to entertain the pioneers at
a big banquet May 28. Covers will be
laid for 75 at the Normal school
gymnasium for this occasion.

ECHO SCHOOLS CLOSED.
License of Owl Saloon Revoked t by
Council.
Echo. May 23. The Echo (public
schools closed yesterday after a most
successful term. The school will
likely be enlarged this summer and
other Improvements will be made.
During the past year the grades have
been raised from eight to eleven.
The council at Its last meeting re
voked the license of the Owl saloon,
after considerable discussion.
Lands in this vicinity continue to
sell and at the present rate, there
will be a great many new people and
many acres of new land under culti
vation next year. ,
A number of carloads of sheep have
been shipped out of here of late by
the different big sheep men.
The brass band of Echo Is arrang
ing to give a social dance In Ethrf
next Friday evening, May 29.

T. li. Wilcox Says He Will Withdraw
If Board of Trade Plunges,
in an emphatic statement today
Theodore B. Wilcox, president of the
Portland Flouring Mills company and
a member of the Portland board of
trade, declared himself strongly op
posed to the establishment of trading
In grain futures on the floor of the
local exchange, says a Portland item.
In the event that the management
of the board of trade a committee of
which is now considering the matter,
decides to engage in the trade In fu
tures, Mr. Wilcox says positively that
he will withdraw from, all participa
tion In the affairs of the exchange.
When the board of trade was . or
ganized as a commercial exchange one
of the tentative plans of the promot
ers was to make it a commercial ex
change In the full sense of the term,
like those of most, of the other great
grain centers of the country, where
dealing In futures Is one of the reg
ular features of the trade.
At the last regular meeting ot 'the
directors of the local exchange a com
mittee was appointed to Investigate
the feasibility of trading In futures
here. That oommlttee has not yet
reported.

Freewater country at thia time. Ow
ing to the cold weather this spring
they have not ripened as early as usu
al, but. atthis time they are coming
in quite freely and there will be a
good market for them. Many are be
ing shipped to Seattle, Spokane and
Walla Walla dally.
Woodson Cummins has sold to P.
H. Lenihan five acres of the Louda
gin tract for $1500, and five acres of
the same tract to C. A. Speer for

E. D. Musgrave has sold to Annie
Fields seven acres east of town for

Now that the commencement of
Columbia college is over the students
are. beginning to leave for their va
rious homes.
Prof. Felix Moore of Columbia col
lege, left yesterday for Eugene to
spend commencement at the Alma
Mater, after which he will go to his
home in Astoria.
A beautiful site, a fifteen acre tract,
has already been secured for an ad
ministration building for Columbia
college. It is possible that the build
ing will be secured for the next term.

Brennan has completed the purchase
from the government reservation at
Fort Reno, Oklahoma, of a troop of
cavalry horses which will be used as
mounts for the members of the Ku
Klux Klan In "The Clansman," on Its
coming tour of the Pacific coast.
The animals have seen hard ser
vice on the western plains, particu
larly In connection with the Indian
troubles In New Mexico and Arizona.
The troop will be brought east and
thoroughly drilled for three months
to accustom them to stage work. The
night riders known as the Ku Klux
Klan who flourished during the re.
construction period in the south, were
daring horsemen, and their exploits
of chivalry and heroism are famed In
song and story.
In the third act of the play the Ku
Klux Klan appear fully armed, robed
and mounted and gallop to the rescue
of the Cameron family whose home
has been Invaded by the carpet bag
gers and their negro allies.
