opean tour. Dr. C. J. Smith had an
experience which he recalls with
pleasure. Tha Incident was also one
of interest because of its historical
feature and because it shows that
though the world is Urge, a man may
nowadays go to distant lands and still

tive chamber the house had adjourn
ed, though the doctor did not know
it .and the explanatory language
which the French doorkeeper used
was all lost on the Umatilla county
man.

gentleman, a somewhat distinguished
looking Frenchman, arrived, and see
lng the trouble, explained In English
to the doctor that the house had ad
journed. "However," said he, "I am a mem
ber of the house of deputies and If
you wish I will show you through the
chambers, though they are ordinarily
denied to visitors when the house Is
not In session." ,
The Invitation was thankfully ac
cepted by Dr. Smith and he was then
shown through the place by the

Frenchman. During the conversation
Dr. Smith said that he was from Or
egon and was pleased to learn that
his entertainer had also been in the
west and had visited In Portland.
He was the Marquis de Chambrun,
member of the house of deputies, and
his wife is a sister of Bellamy Storer,
the American diplomat. Through his
wife the Frenchman Is related to
Congressman Nicholas Longworth,
and he Is also a direct descendant of
Marquis de ts. Fayette, hero of the
revolutionary war.
ARRESTED FOR
ROBBING A CAR
Ralph SfcCiunber Lodged in County
Jail by Umatilla Marshal.
Ralph McCumber, a transient. Is in
the county Jail charged with robbing
a work car at Umatilla. Be wa ar
rested at Umatilla yesterday by Mar
shal Tillson and was brought to this
city this morning.
McCumber is accused of having
stolen 112 in money and some other
goods front the car. When arrested
the money was found on his person
and th other plunder was discovered
in a coal shed. He has practically ad
mitted fell gTiUt, .
More Scarlet Fever. .
Two additional cases of scarlet fever"
have Just been reported, the attend
ing physlclon being Dr. C. J. Smith.
One of the cases la In the home of J.
E. Montgomery, 501 .Garfield street,
while the other is at Bert Lo veil's, 1104
Raley street Mayor Murphy and C
M. Hogue are also quarantined away
from their homes because of scarlet
fever in their families.
34,000 MORE TROUT
IN UMATILLA STREAMS.

The trout streams 6f Umn'lHa
county have Just been enriched by
the addition of 84,000 trout fry sent
here by the bureau of fisheries and
they should help In making fishing
good during the coming season.
The trout arrived here Saturday
and they were distributed as follows:
Six thousand were taken to Birch
and Bear creeka by Elmer Snyder.
Six thousand were taken to the
forks of McKay creek by Will Lane.
Six thousand were taken to Meach
am creek by C. K. Cranston and
James Sturgls.
Fourteen thousand were taken to
the Umatilla by J. A. Borle and G. I.
Ladow.
PLEAD NOT GUILTY.
Saloonmen Charged With Selling Li
quor to Minora Will Stand Trial.
When the saloonmen charged with
selling liquor to minors were aralgn
ed yesterday afternoon all but one en.
tered pleas of not guilty while the
latter, Charles Morrlsoa, pleads this
afternoon.
The hearing occurred shortly after
4 o'clock yesterday afternoon before
Judge H. J. Bean. Those Indicted by
District Attorney Phelps are Gus Arp,
Cloyd Oliver, Charles Hamilton, M. H.
Gillette and F. G. McNabb. Each
man was indicted upon two charges.
Examinations at the Academy.
Final examinations are now In pro
gress at Pendleton academy, the close
of the school year being at hand. The
past year has been the best In the his
tory of the academy and both teach
ers and students are already looking
forward to the opening of the next
year when many Improvements and
additions to the equipment of the
academy are planned.

Presbyterians Through.
A special car bearing northwest
Presbyterians to the general assembly
which will be held at Kansas City this
week, was attached to No. 2, the east
bound O. R. & N. train, last evening.
About 40 delegates were In the party
passing here but the number will be
augmented from other eastern Oregon
points.
To Episcopal Convention.
Rev. and Mrs. Charles Qulnney left
last evening for Portland, where they
will attend the Episcopal convention
of the northwest states, which Is meet
ing there today and. the remainder of
the week.
Henry Blackmail Here. .
Henry Blackman, the well known
pioneer of Heppner, but now a resi
dent of Portland, is in the city today
on a business trip and ts optimistic a
ever over the future of eastern Ore
gon. He notes with pleasure the Irri
gation development of the west and
north portions of Umatilla county and
looks for one of the richest sections
and densest population in the north
west in this and Morrow county In the
next few years. Mr. Blackman lived
for 28 years in eastern Oregon and Is
known to all 'the old pioneers and is
enjoying his ylft here very much.
Vacation at Camas Prairie.
Rev. and Mrs. C. R. Haudenschleld
passed through the city today, en their
way to Tacoma, where Rev. Hauden
schleld will conduct revival meetings
for a month, after which they will re
turn to this city and go to Camas
Prajrie for a month's outing during
June and July. While conducting the
revival meeting here last January
Rev. Haudenschleld decided that this
county offered the best advantages for
a pleasant summer's outing and he
will take advantage of It.

season will be opened here with a
game with Walla Walla and the Gar
den City players have promised to
bring a large excursion with them to
see the opening game.
Games will also be played here
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and
the hftter part of next week Pendle
ton will go to Walla Walla to open
the league season there.
When the league schedule was first
made a week ago It was arranged
that Pendleton and Walla Walla open
the season at the latter place. But
through the Influence of Manager
Lorimer the game has been switched
to this city.
For the opening game of the league
season Lorimer Is now arranging his
team and he will have a strong line
up. In several positions It will be
different from In the past and the
people of the city are asked to turn
out and see the first league game.
Old Association Dies.
L. G. Ftatler, president of the old
independent baseball association, has
called a meeting of the association
members to be held In the Commer
cial club rooms tonight for the pur
pose of settling up the affairs of the
old organization. All those holding
stock are asked to be present and
likewise all bills against the associa
tion should be presented at that time.
Now that the Pendleton team has
entered the four town league the old
association will withdraw from the
field and henceforth the team will be
under slightly different auspices.
Dubois Faction Loses.
Boise, May 19- Yesterday's demo
cratic primaries In Idaho Indicate the
defeat of the Dubois faction all over
the state. In Ada c6unty the antl
Dubols ticket won out In every pre
cinct but one. The result in Idaho
county is still in doubt. On the re
turns of this county the control of the
convention depends.

of the Umatilla County Equal Suf
frage association, has Just Issued the
following circular letter to the voters
of Umatilla county, urging them to re
member the equal suffrage amend-1
ment to the cofistitutin which Is to be
voted upon at the coming state elec
tion. Two years ago Umatilla county vot
ed in favor of this amendment, a ma
jority of about 80 having been cast
for It and the noble women wno are
urging It again this year hope to see
the county again In the equal suffraga
rank with a larger vote than before.
The letter Is as follows:
To the Electorate of Oregon:
On June first the men of Oregon
will be called upon to cast their bal
lots for or against. equality of suf
frage. Casting aside all prejudice and
all Inherited predilection, can any vo
ter give a single reason why the wo
men are not entitled to a voice In the
affairs of state and nation?
Are they not equally Intelligent with
men? Have they not the same Inter
est In good government? If this Is a
government of the people, why should
half the people be excluded frem the
ballot?
Let me appeal to the manhood, the
Justice and the Intelligence of the men
of Umatilla county to vote "yes" for
the equal suffrage amendment on
election day.
