Philadelphia, May 16. A notable
array of leaders In the International
movement for the abolition of war has
been attracted to Philadelphia by the
Pennsylvania Arbitration and Peace
conference, which opens this evening
and will last through tomorrow, Mon
day and Tuesday. Governor Stuart
will preside at the Inaugural meeting
this evening, and the speakers on the
program Include several distinguish
ed devotees of universal unity.
Tomorrow morning peace services
will be held In churches of all denomi
nations. A committee of clergymen
has this feature In charge, and hopes
to make It universal throughout the
city,. The delegates will attend the
afternoon service of the Y. M. C. A.
In the Oarrlck theater and an evening
service will be held In the Baptist
temple. The speakers will be Rev.
Walter Walch, of Scotland; Rabbi
Stephen S. Wise of New York: Rabbi
J. Leonard Levy, of Pittsburg; Rev.
Frederick Lynch, of New York; Ben
jamin F. Trueblood, Edwin D. Mead
of Boston; Rev. James L.Tryon and
Rev. Charles S. Beals, both of Boston.
Monday morning's meeting In Horti
cultural Hall will be for the women,
with Mrs. Cornelius Stevenson In the
chair. The speakers will be Miss Mary
A. Burnham, Miss Emma Blaklston,
Mrs. Mary Wright Sewall, of Cincin
nati; Mrs. Frederick Nathan, of New
York; Mrs. Lucia Ames Mead of Bos
ton, and Mrs. Anna Garland Spencer.
On Monday afternoon there will be a
bench and bar meeting, with Senator
Knox presiding. In the evening the
meeting will be held at the Academy
of Music, and -Senator Knox win aiso
be present. General Horace T. Por
ter, who was one of the United states
delegates to the second Hague confer
ence, will speak, as will Dr. James
Brown Scott, of Washington; Con
gressman Bartholdt, of Missouri, and
Justice Brewer, of the United States
supreme court.
The business session will be held on
Tuesday morning, and in me auer-
noon there will be a meeting at tne
Academy of Music, at which there

names have not yet been announced

Cents to Portland Grain Rate.
Again the bar of discrimination has
been placed against Portland In an ef
fort to boost the trade of other coast
ports, says the Oregon Dally Journal.
The steamship rate on wheat from
Portland to San Francisco today Is
f 2.60 a ton, while with a much longer
haul the grain Is being carried from
any Puget sound port to the Califor
nia city at 2 a ton.
This discrimination of BO cents a ton
against the port of Portland is causing
much complaint among grain shippers
here and In the south. The discrimi
nation Is almost sufficient to stop en
tirely the flow of wheat from Portland
to the California market. Had It not
heen for the great shortage In the
southern supplies It Is likely that not
a single bushel would now be shipped
from here to San Francisco because
of this discrimination.
Represents profit
The extra 60 cents a ton which Port
land wheat shippers are forced to pay
and which In turn may be taken from
the pockets of the producers, repre
sents In most Instances the total
profits of the local shippers. With
such a handicap against them the
Portland grain shippers are uttering
Iwud complaints and are talking of
calling a meeting In an effort to rem
edy the matter.
Local grain people are not only
complaining at this time of the extra
charge which Harrlman Is imposing
against Portland In the matter of
wheat shipments, but the Interests say
that while the service at the northern
ports Is being made more frequent It
was not long ago that the Harrlman
clique took off one of Its steamers In
order to further crowd the freight
holds and make a larger profit,
