XO ARMY LIFE FOR HIM.
(.niduate of We. Point Hchlgng His
Position.
Washington, May 14. First of the
graduates of this year's West Point
class to resign his commission, after
a brief experience as a soldier of
Uncle Sam, Is Second Lieutenant H.
Ayers, Seventh Cavalry, who leaves
the army today. Last year four offi
cers resigned within three months af
ter leaving the military academy.
This was considered an unusually
large number, and was partly respon
sible for Mr. Taft's telling this year's
graduates that the war department ex
pected them to stay In the army. It
was therefore rather unexpected that
Lieut. Ayres would have so lltle diffi
culty In getting his resignation accept
ed. Apparently the war department
Is not going to stand on the letter of
the law which binds a lieutenant to
serve eight years from the time of en
tering West Point.-
In the early part of the last century
there was a different feeling about
resignations of graduates. There was
so little change for promotion because
of the absence of a rtelred list that
many officers resigned. A classic ex
ample of '.his Is afforded by the class
of 1831, which had some distinguished
officers in It and numbered In all 33
graduates. Within six years after
leaving West Point 23 of that year's
class had left the service for other
uiursuits. Tne nrst rive or isai re
signed wunin live years aiier gradu
ating, the sixth on the list died In
Florida in 1839, and the next two al
so rexglned within eight years, leav
ing but seven officers on the rolls.
