The Greater Norrla and Rowe circus
arrived In this city at an early hour
this morning on two special trains
from Xne Dalles, where they exhibit
ed yesterday afternoon.
Work. of unloading the cars was
commenced immediately and long be
fore many of the good housewives of
this city had prepared porridge for
their lords and masters the army
of over 450 circus attaches sat down
to a hot breakfast at the Hotel Norrls
and Rowe, at the baseball park.
The country beau and his sweet
heart, the noble red man, little John'
nle and his "weeny" sister, dressed In
their best bibs and tuckers, were on
the streets early, waiting for the pa
rade, and all wearing anxious expres
sions. Repressed excitement was In
the air, superinduced by the gladsome
circus the event of events In all
their simple, unaffected lives.
The peanut venders and the fellow
with the toy balloons were also In evi
dence and assumed an air of indiffer
ence such as prosperity can only pro
duce. The foghorn tones of the fellow with
the leather lungs was heard to ex
claim, "Hold your hosses." the ele
phants are "earning," and then, oh,
then, such a craning of necks. Tho
Goodyear Rubber company should
have had representatives here today
rubber Is scarce.
The parade past, the vast throng
scurried to the exhibition grounds
where the outside free attractions were
given. The fat lady, the tattooed
Greek, Texas Jack, who tHrows knives
at his wife, and is such a poor marks
man that he did not hit her once; the
csqulmos, "Zip," Barnum's what Is it,
the pretty one with the huge snakes.
Doss, the human telescope,- South
Sea Island JOe and his wife, Beno, the
bearded lady, the hundred and one la
dles and gentlemen that nature took
liberties with are all with Norrls and
Rowe this year., The pink lemonade,
the sawdust, the tents, the peanuts and
the babble of tongues of representa
tives of every nation are all with the
big show. .The excitement, oh, the
Joy of It all. No wonder that the clr
cur goes on like the brook, forever!
The doors to the big show were opj
ened at 1 o'clock and the perform
ance was started at 2:15. A large au
dience was present when the ring
master blew his whistle, which sum
mons the performers Into the ring.
The grand entree In which all of the
performers of the show take parts Is
a very pleasing spectacle. The trap
pings and the coloring of the rich cos
tumes made a most pleasing effect.
From this time on during the two and
a halt nours oi tne snow dozens oi
great acts were Introduced, as many
as six acts taking place at the same
time.
The work of the Peerless Potters,
aerlallsts, being the best of the kind
ever seen In this city. The Honey
Mora troupe, the Orton family, the St.

Qulgomato troupe, the McDonald fam
ily were all excellent
Another performance will be given

BEETS ARE ALL SEEDED.
Sugar Company Completes Planting
2300 Acres of Seed.
The seeding of approximately 2300
acres of beets, and 2200 acres of small
grain by the Amalgamated Sugar
company is finished, and for a time at
least, thinning of beets will be the
principal work of the large crews
which the company maintains, says
the La Grande Observer.
The Union ranches were the last to
by completed, but they are now seed
ed and the next big event will be the
harvest. Six hundred acres of hay
will be cared for In the meantime.
Village of Tents.
Around the headquarters of the
Union ranches are many little villages
of tents and temporary quarters, occu
pied by the Germans who have been
imported to the Grand Ronde valley
to eventually displace oriental labor.
The Japanese now employed by the
company are conrlnea to the La
Grande district of the company's hold
ings. In time, more permanent quar.
tors will be provided for the Germans.
At present, however, they live In tents
and temporary houses, and are con
tented with what is supplied them.
Their work Is highly satisfactory.
For the past several days. Manager
Sebbelov has had a crew thinning the
beets which were seeded early and are
now far enough advanced In their
growth to need attention by thinners.
The men who dare always com
plaining about "crooked politics" are
the men who never try to straighten
It out.
