WASHINGTON GROWERS
. WOriJ) GET INTO RESERVES
Dry Ranges Force WaJiMfrton SI loop,
men to Sock Kir 1 lor Ailmiadon to
Cawndc Rewire While Reserve
Will Not Be Open Vntll July 1, the
Sheepmen Will -Ask to Re Permit
ted to Enter at Once.
That Washington stockmen are se
riously In need of grass Is shown by
the fact that the woolgrowers of the
Evergreen state are now clamoring to
be allowed to enter the Cascade for.
est reserve on account of the scarcity
of grass on the outside. The Taklma
Republic says of the matter:
Stockmen of Washington,' acting
through the Washington Association
of Woolgrowers, are preparing a re
quest to be made to the forest reserve
supervisor of the Rainier forest, re
serve at the earliest posible moment
They claim that such permission It
necessary to the sarvatlon of the
flocks. ,
The thousands of head of stock In
the eastern portion of the state ara
already suffering because of the lack
of forage on the ranges. The ewes
are not getting enough food and can
not nourish the lambs. A stunted
generation would be the result of a
continuation of such conditions.
Again petition Supervl-wr.
The reserve. In the ordinary course
of events, will not be open until July
B or thereabouts. In the winter,
when the reserve was apportioned, a
request was made that permission be
given to enter it earlier than the date
given but this request was not acted
upon favorably. It will be again put
up to the supervisor, the weather con
ditions having made the necessity,
which the stockmen felt then existed,
doubly great at this time.
Arthur Coffin and S. J. Cameron
are among the North Taklma stock
men who think the reserve should be
opened as early as possible In order
to prevent serious loss to those with
stock. They think that as a general
thing the lower portions of the reserve
can carry stock at a date earlier than
Is permitted, and that, new sections
having been Incorporated within the
reserve which had previously been
used by the stockmen until the old
reserve was open, these sections at
Uast might be thrown open soon.
Thinks he Role Is Wrong.
"The general rule I think is wrong,"
said S. J. Cameron this morning. "The
whole reserve Is thrown open early in
July. This opening date applies to
grass at the edge of the timber as well
as to the land away up 6000 feet high
where the snow Is lying. There is
good grass now at the lower altitudes
which is going to waste while the
snow Is covering the higher altitudes
where there will be no grass for some
time to come.
"However, under the present policy
It is all closed against the stockmen
wMIe the fodder Is burned out on the
low land and the stock la suffering.
We are to again ask the forest reserve
supervisor for permission to graze at
a date earlier than that fixed for the
general opening. Some of the owners
will meet 'with serious loss, otherwise
and there ts no question that thou
sands of head of stock will suffer un
less relief Is afforded."

H. H. Tammen was In town for a
short stop-over today. He said: "It
is ridiculous for a small show, whose
train, parade, performance, all testi
fy to Its real size In no uncertain way,
to claim allegiance to the really big
shows of the world.
There are only three shows In the
circus trust Barnum-Balley. Ring
ling Bros, and Buffalo Bill's Wild
West. There are a number of smal
ler circuses that appear to do their
Lidding.
. "Sells-Floto Is not In the trust and
we are proud of It, Sells-Floto Is the
only circus that exhibited In San
Francisco this season. The engage
ment was under the Shriners and
$5000 was given to charity. Sells
Floto Is the only circus with the
Shriners' approval, . the highest rec
ommendation this side of the angels."
Mr. Tammen further said: "Citizens
should not be misled. They have a
way of finding out. The telephone,
telegraph and traveling men know
the different shows.- Inquire, Investi
gate and always look an outfit over.
See their cars and go through them.
See the parade, the horses and their
stables. Peep Into the 'cook tent
Sells-Floto urgently request that this
be done as to their show. What other
circus urges this? And then we were
here last year. Sells-Floto Is known
and now it Is up to the people. I
have faith In the good, sober Judg
ment of the citizens. Our date In
Pendleton is Saturday, May 30."
The Pendleton Girl.
A letter from the ' Pendleton fclrl
with the Sells-Floto circus to be here
Decoration day (May 30), requests
that the newspapers quit mentioning
her. She would like to slip int her
old town and right out again without
being known. From the way the peo
ple are Interested she will bo unable
to do this. It Is a safe wager or bet
that some one will recognize and pick
her out. "Who Is she?" Is still the
paramount question for discussion
and will so remain until Sells-Floto
circus' day, Saturday, May 30.
