THE RATTLER.
It Rarsly 8ounds Its Not of Warning
Until AtUcktd.
Contrary to the gcueral belief, the
rattler rarely gives Its characteristic
note of warning until actually attack'
ed. . In fact, tbe sharp, vibrant ring of
lta terminal appendage la probably de
signed more to assist this very slug'
glah serpent to obtain Its food than to
sound defiance or warning. In the
first place, serpenta possess but the
most rudimentary traces of auditory
apparatus and are practically deaf, tbe
deficiency in tbe sense of bearing be
Lag compensated for by an extreme
sensitiveness of feeling which makes
them aware of the approach of moving
objects by the vibration of the ground.
Ilunters, treading cautiously upon
oft carpet of moss or leaves to avoid
alarming game, will often step close
to or over a rattler without disturbing
it or receiving warning, and while
many snakes are seen and killed by
them it Is probable that a far greater
number are passed by unnoticed. AH
snakes are timid and would rather run
than fight, and the rattler Is not lnvlt
lng certain destruction by advertising
lta whereabouts In the brush. Francis
Metcalfe In Outing Magazine.
CAUGHT THE THIEF.
An Incident Which Illustrates Japanese
Detective Methods.
Recently lu tbe village of Tabara

above tbe age of fifteen years were as
aembled In front of tbe local Shinto
shrine at the call of the village chief,
A thief had been making depredations
In the local tobacco plantations, and
the chief sought to discover him. Out
lines of the feet of all the villagers
were taken on sheets of paper, and
then these were compared with the
tracks left by tbe thief In tbe tobacco
fields. Nothing resulted from this ex
perlment The next day the inhabit

FICTION AND FACT.
The Message In the 8tory Book and
In Real Life.
In a magaxlne:
"I don't like you any more."
Harold Hopllte looked up at the
quaint figure a boy of six, with
mouth smeared with huckleberry pie,
Harold was glum.
"I don't like you any more."
-Whyr
" 'Cause you made sister cry."
"Ethel cry! I dldn't-I couldn't-
make her cry."
"Well, i he's crying now when yon
said nothing when you walked away,
Why didn't yon say by-by and kiss
her when you're going away? I al
woys do."
"I will! Right now!"
And Harold hastened back to make
np the lovers' quarrel.
In real life:
"Say, sister gave me a piece of pie to
come down and see if you'd gone and
If you hadn't to try to get you back
past where she was sitting on tbe
porch getting ready to be crying."
"Oh!"-New York American.
The Spleen as Food.
In France and Italy many persons
eat the spleen, what we call In French
"ratte." I have eaten It myself. Get
erally from a pig It weighs about eight
ounces, and it Is situated on the right
side of the pig, touching the liver. A
spleen from a cow or bull weighs
about two pounds, but Is a little more
spongy than the pig'B spleen, which Is
the best. If some one should start the
fashion we would after awhile pay 75
cents a portion In first class restau
rants, especially If some person of
mark should start the habit. Chef Va-
lere Braguehals In Letter to New York
Tribune.

DIET AND SLEEP.
Eating Before Retiring and Digestion
During Slumber.
Diet has little Influence on sleep ex
cept In so far as It may produce dis
turbances of digestion and through
these of tbe general balance of health.
Tbe hypnotic effects of certain foods,
such as onions, lettuce, milk, etc., are
chiefly imaginary. Even the time of
the last meal of tbe day Is of relative
ly little Importance except that It Is
well to let this be at least two or three
hours before retiring. But even this
rule has many exceptions, as many
healthy laboring men habitually fall
asleep over their pipes directly after
supper, and children after poking tbe
spoon Into their little eyes nod off over
the tea table, with the bread and but
ter still clutched in their chubby fists.
Tbe processes of digestion probably
go on more slowly during sleep, but
they are perfectly carried out, as is il
lustrated by the almost Invariable hab
it among animals of going to sleep
directly after a meal.
Indeed, a moderate amount of food
In the stomach or Intestines seems to
promote slumber. Many night workers,
for Instance, sleep much better for tak
ing a light or even full supper Just be
fore retiring. Dr. Woods Hutchinson
In American Magazine..
The Tenors' Parts.
Probably the composers are largely
responsible for tenor worship. In Ver
di's operas, with hardly an exception,
the tenor plays a more important part
than the baritone or bass, and the
same is true of other opera writers,
Mozart's "Don Giovanni" being a nota
ble exception. Wagner wrote one
opera. "The Flying Dutchman," In
which the baritone la king, whereas In
six of his works tbe supremacy of the
tenor Is indicated by the very titles
"Rlenzi," Tannhauser." "Lohengrin,"
"TriBtan und Isolde," "Siegfried,"
"Parsifal." This being. so, we shall
probably continue to be subject to tbe
tyranny of one tenor or another, unless
It be true, as was maintained at a con
clave of French savants, that tbe tenor
voice Is a relic of barbarism, destined
to become extinct Argonaut
Poems, Pictures and Songs.
It takes all kinds of people to make
np a world and all kinds of poetry to
make up a world literature. Despite
the efforts of the critics to lay down
definite canons of Judgment for the
literary, pictorial- and musical arts
most of us continue to like a poem, a
picture or a song for no better reason
than because we like it It appeals to
us, and If It does that It Is for us a
true poem, picture or song. Whether
It Is to be classed among the great
products of art Is another question.
That depends upon the universality
and permanence of the appeal it
makes. Current Literature. '
