BUTTER BY THE YARD.
The Way It Is 8old, Pure and Sweet,
In Cambridge, England.
Id Cambridge, England, butter la
old by the yard For generations it
has been the practice of Cambridge
shire dairy folk to roll their butter Into
lengths, each length measuring a yard
and weighing a pound. Deftly wrap
ped In strips of clean white cloth, the
cylindrical rolls are packed In long,
narrow baskets made for the purpose
and thus conveyed to market The
butter women who, in white linen
aprons and sleeves, preside over the
tails in the market hive no need of
weights or scales for dispensing their
wares. Constant practice and ex
perienced eyes enable them with a
stroke of the knife to divide a yard
of butter Into halves or quarters with
almost mathematical exactness.
The university people are the chief
buyers of this curiosity shaped prod
uct In addition to being famed for
Its purity and sweetness Cambridge
"yard butter" Is eminently adapted for
being served to the students In the
dally commons. Cut in conveniently
lied plecesisnd accompanied by a loaf
of the best wheat bread, a stated por
tion Is sent round every morning to
the rooms of the undergraduates for
use at breakfast and tea. Chicago

A laborer was engaged In the grounds
of an asylum and received instructions
to pay no attention whatever to the re

Somo little time after be commenced
work the governor of the asylum, a
well known doctor, looking at the prog

alteration. The workman dug steadily
on and never lifted his head.
The doctor raised his voice, but the
man, without answering, went ou dig
ging energetically. The doctor threat
ened, stormed and finally thundered
out: .

A Monster Spring.
j No state In the Union has larger or
' more numerous springs than Florida.
Many of them form good sized streams
from the start, and some of them are
navigable. The largest spring In the
state, and one of the largest and prob
ably the best known In the United
States, is Silver spring, which Is lo
cated six miles east of Ocala. This
spring forms the source of the Ok
lawha river, a tributary of the Bt
Johns, and steamboats traversing the
river enter the spring basin, which has
an area of several acres. The water
Is from twenty-five to thirty feet deep
and Is wonderfully clear, appearing ab
solutely devoid of color. Minneapolis

Wyoming Owner Ixses 800 Head In
Heavy Rain Storm.
A correspondent writing from Cas
per, wyo., to tne cneyenne xnoune,
says of a serious loss of sheep in that
vicinity:
The only serious loss of sheep In
this vicinity during the past winter Is
reported by Robert Crosswalte, who
recently sheared a band near Casper.
Tho sheep were In poor condition
and were caught In a heavy rain storm
while on their bed ground.
The band consisted of about 1800
head and were bedded lir a narrow
draw at the bottom of a range of
hills. The rain water drained Into
the draw flooding the ground and the
efforts of the herder and campmover
to move the sheep out of the pocket
were unavailing. The animals hud
dling together In the draw In which
the water was rapidly rising. A little
over half of the band was saved, the
remainder, about eight hundred head,
being drowned.
Mr. Crosswalte also reports the
only sale of wool thus far reported
In the state. He consigned the clip
from tho above mentioned band,
about 13,000 pounds, to a Chicago
house to bo sold on commission, the
firm ndvnnclng 10 cents per pound on
the shipment, which was something
less than a carload.
There have been but few other
losses reported In this vicinity, due In
the main to severe frosty nights fol
lowing heavy rains upon shorn sheep.
The losses have been so distributed
among the sheepmen that the indi
vidual loss Is Insignificant, the sheep
which succumbed being the poorest
of the flocks.
