Union Fruit Uninjured.
mlfslonor, states that there has been
no damage whatever In any part of
Union county from froat, says the La
Grande Star. In all localities the
fruit prospects are as promising as
In uny previous year.
The frOHt quentlon Is a relative
proposition, anyway, says Mr. Geer,
and thin county Is as nearly Immune
as any other. In the localities where
the seasons are earlier is the same
liability of damage from frost and
cold weather as there Is in the locali
ties where the seasons are later. There
Is about as much trouble from this
cause In one country as another. In
the Walla Walla country and the
Snake river valley there are as many
failures, one year with another, as
there In Grande Ronde, although the
season In those localities are at least
a month ahead of this. '
Another observation on this sub
Jeet is that vegetation here through
acclimltlzatlon, can stand harder
weather than that of other localities,
And as a matter of fact the vegeta-
lon here Is less liable to damage than
In the localities where It Is more
tender and accustomed to warmer
temperature.

Itlg Lumber Order.
The Summervllle Lumber company
which maintains offices and yards at
I mliler, has closed a contract for sup
plying a Wisconsin firm with 35 car
loads of lumber, which Is to be ship

will permit, says the La Grande Star.
The kind of material for the filling of
this order Is what Is known as "shop
lumber." It'ls the pieces of odd ends
that are used In the manufacture of
sash and doors.
The Summervllle Lumber com
pany's mill is located a few miles
from the town of Summervllle and
they were only recently started for the
season's run. The output Is now about
10,000 feet daily and It Is the Inten
tion to :Ut 5,000.000 feet this season.
Swept Over Kails.
Two men, H. V. Engleklng and
Grant Powell, were swept over the
great falls of the Spokane river today
and drowned. Three men were re
moving some timbers under the
Washington street bridge this after
noon, working on a raft that was fas
tened to the bridge by a rope. The
rope broke, and the swift waters
caught the raft. As they rushed by
the Howard street bridge, two blocks
below, men threw ropes toward them,
and A. Simeon seized one and was
saved. The other two men Jumped
for the ropes but missed, and a mo
ment later they were swept over the
falls. Spokane Review.
No Saloon for Two Rrvers.
In the matter of the application of
Jacob Moser and George W. Thompson
for a beer license at Two Rivers, the
county commissioners deferred action,
until it could be ascertained more
clearly what the attitude of the peo
pie of that country was concerning
the matter, says the Walla Walla
Statesman. None of the commission
ers felt like forcing a saloon on the
people there unless they really want
ed It. A petition ' signed by about a
dozen residents of Two Rivers was
presented by the applicants to sup
port the case. Decision was deferred
until next month.
Pleasure Ground on Island.
The beautiful Island lying opposite
Hope, about one mile from shore, for
merly knows as Warren's Island, In
Lake Pend d'Orlelle, has passed Into
the hands of several of the wealthiest
capitalists of Butte, Mont., says a dis
patch from Hope, Idaho. This Is one
of the most handsome. spots In the
northwest. A boulevard will be built
around the grounds beautified with
park and flower decorations, for the
comiori or tourists, in the summer
months. While the consideration Is
not fully known it was reported that
General Warren refused $20,000 In
the summer of 1906 for this place.
Kodol completely digests all classes
of food. It will get right at the trou

the stomach. It is pleasant to take.
