Success Is marking the Journey of
the O. R. & N. farming demonstra
tion train through the eastern Wash
ington counties, according to the re
ports from the train. The Portland
Oregonlan of Tuesday says of the
train:
"11. B. Miller, general freight agent
for the Harrlman lines In Oregon, ye
terday telegraphed the local office
that the farming demonstration train
of the O. R. & N. company through
the Pataha, Touchet and Walla Wal
la valleys Is proving a decided success.
Mr. Miller Is accompanying the train,
and his telegram from Pomeroy,
Wash., was as follows:
" 'Demonstration here a great suc
cess. Six hundred farmers turned
out. The schools were dismissed and
400 pupils marched In a body to the
train. Much enthusiasm and Inter
est are manifested.'
"The train started from Starbuck
at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon,
reaching Pomeroy at 3 o'clock. At
this, point the train remained until
4:45 o'clock while the demonstration
was conducted by speakers from the
Washington state college. Today the
following points will be visited: Tur
ner, Dayton, Huntsvllic, Walturg,
Prescott and Walla Walla. The itin
erary will be concluded tomorrow by
visiting other points In the vicinity
of Walla Walla."
Coining to Umatilla.
On next Wednesday, May 13, the
O. R. & N. Co. will run the demon
stration train through western Uma
tilla county, reaching western Uma
4 p. m. for a lecture.
The farmers of this vicinity are es
pecially urged to be present at this
lecture which will be given In the
demonstration car.

Local option elections for county
prohibition will be hold In 18 of the
33 counties In Oregon next montn,
Eight of the other 16 counties are
"dry," and in four of these the ques
tion of saloons or no saloons is to be
resubmitted at the June election on
petition of the liquor men. There
are only five counties in the state In
which there is no "dry" territory, and
the local optlonltsts have called for a
county election in each one of these
counties next month. This extensive
campaign to invade further the terri
tory now held by the saloon Interests
Is only a preliminary step to an elec
tion on state prohibition, which Is
planned by the cold water people for
1910. The Anti-Saloon Leaguers
and the prohibitionists have made up
their minds to cooperate In a cam
paign that Is expected to add Oregon
to the list of prohibition states two
years hence.
In the meantime both organizations
are doing effective work In spreading
an influence positively opposed to the
saloon. State prohibition two years
honee, declare the temperance work
ers, will more surely be brought about
by adding to the "dry" territory in
the coming election. With this ob
ject in view elections on the subject
of county prohibition will ,be held In
the following 18 counties this year:
Clackamas, Columbia, Coos, Crook,
Douglns, Grant, Harney, Jackson,
Josephine, Klamath, Lake, Marlon,
Morrow, Polk, Umatilla, Union, Was
co and Washington.
Included in this list are the five
only counties In the state In which
there Is no "dry" territory, as fol
lows; Grant, Harney, Klamath, Lake
and Polk. On the petition of the li
quor men the question of county pro
hibition will be resubmitted In June
In the following counties: Linn,
Lane, Sherman and Wasco.
The local optlonlsts have also filed
petitions for precinct and subdivision
precinct elections In nine counties, In
cluding Multnomah, In which 13 of
these petitions have been filed. A
majority of these petitions have
have been atacked on legal grounds
and the question of deciding In which
precincts the election will bo held
will he determined some time this
Week. This list of counties also In
cludes Clackamas, Wasco, Umatilla,
Grant, Lake, Josephine, Douglas and
Marion.
With the exception of Marlon coun
ty, all of these counties will also vote
on county prohibition, but the anti
saloon people have decided to take
up the crusade from two positions ar
guing that should the county ns a
whole go "wet" It Is possible that
some of the precincts may oust the
saloon and add more territory to that
already gained.
"For four months the Antl-SalOon
League workers liavo been laboring
assiduously and successfully to organ
ize the state or such counties In the
state as were desired for voting on
the local option question at the gen
eral election June 1," said James R.
Knodell, superintendent of the Antl
Saloon League of Oregon, yesterday.
"Eighteen counties have filed peti
tions with their respective county
courts for an election. In addition,
about 23 precincts and combinations
of precincts have done the same.
Forty-one separate opportunities will
be given the people of the state to
say whether or not they want the sa
loon. , . - .

be successful. In the Interior coun
ties Klamath. Lake, Crook, Grant
and Harney we find that the cattle
men and ranchers are arrayed against
the saloon and probably will vote it
out of their territory. The same Is
true In mining districts among the
employers of labor and the' laborers
themselves. We find both Joining
the ranks of the ahtl-saloon people.
"During the last few months we
have been solicited by every county
In the state, with the exception of
one, to carry our fight Into every
county and drive out the saloon. But
this Is not a fight for this year only,
or to carry the easy spots In the state.
Our unchangeable purpose Is never
to cease In our efforts, nor to turn
aside In our endeavors, until every
licensed liquor dispensary in Oregon
Is closed. Wherever we succeed in
June we will Inaugurate In July a
campaign of law enforcement. We
do not expect the saloons to He down
when the ballot only Is against them.
Also, wherever we are defeated In
June we will Immediately arrange for
another campaign.
"What Next' meetings will be held
all over the state, whether we win or
lose on June 1 and the plans for the
future work will be arranged. The
benefits we will gain In this present
struggle Is the alignment of our for
ces' against the saloon and the train
ing we will get for a greater battle
