That many of the southern Oregon
counties are going to be "dry" after
June 1, Is shown by the sentiment
expressed all through that section of
the state.
Mayor Matlock of Eugene, a broth
er of W. F. Matlock of Pendleton, Is
now campaigning southern Oregon
for prohibition. An Item In the Ore.
gon Dally Journal says:
A grand temperance rally was held
by the antl-saloon forces in Grants
Pass yesterday afternoon and even
ing. Mayor Matlock of Eugene, ad
dressed a large crowd during the
afternoon. He presented the benefits
of non-license from the standpoint of
mayor who has served office under
both the closed and wide-open policy,
Mayor Matlock's address was forceful
and will be a powerful factor In
strengthening the antl-saloon forces
here. Several hundred school child
ren marched across town, carrying
banners and flags, and formed a
chorus at the church, where the meet
ing was held.
The several ministers preached pro
hibition sermons both morning and
tvenlng. At the Methodist church
the evening service was largely given
over to the addresses of laymen on
the subject of temperance and no li
cense.
The antl-saloon forces are confi
dent of victory In Josephine county
at the coming election. They are
conducting an enthusiastic campaign
and have energetic workers laboring
hard and constantly In every precinct.
They hope to make every part of the
county dry. The campaign Is being
waged along strictly business lines.
The moral part of the question Is
largely Ignored and the proposition
Is presented to the taxpayers from
the business side.
Matlock's Campaign.
Mayor Matlock has been holding
meetings and speaking In Jackson
and Josephine counties during the
past week, beginning with Medford
lost Monday night, where he was wel
comed by a large and enthusiastic au
dience. The mayor presented figures
In relation to the prosperity of Eu
gene and Lane county under no li
censes. He showed that a dry town
by no means necessarily a dead
town. Eugene was never so prosper
ous as during the last year, he main
tains.
Tuesday night -Mayor Matlock spoke
at Jacksonville to an audience which
filled the court house, although It was
circus day at Medford.
Wednesday night another large
crowd gathered at the opera house
at Central Point and applauded his
presentation of the prohibition cause.
Gold Hill was visited Thursday and
profound Impression was made with
simple talk abount actual facts In
the recent experience of Mr. Matlock
as mayor of Eugene. The assurance
was given that Gold Hill would give
majority for no license at the June
lection. The sentiment. It Is claim
ed, has grown so strong against the
saloon all over Jackson couny that
predictions are freely made, even by
saloon men themselves, that the coun-
wlll go dry by a large majority.
The campaign is being carried on
Igorously all over Jackson county

lining up for a dry county.

Union Pacific Meeting.

sponse to a call of the board of di
rectors, a special meeting of the
stockholders of the Union Pacific
Railroad company, was convened here

California Primaries.

reform" is the slogan In the political
battle to be waged In today's pri
maries throughout California, the
culmination of a wordy warfare which
has been waged within the ranks of
both the democratic and republican
parties for several months. Leaders
of the Llncoln-Rooseevlt republican
league, which has been fighting the
republican organization, declare that
an overwhelming victory for reform
principles Is certain.
