New York, May 6. The girls of
Horace Mann school at Broadway and
120th street have been forbidden to
wear ultra-fashionable or extravagant
headgear, falBe hair, elaborate adorn
ment of Jewelry, high heel shoes and
peek-a-boo waists. Ever since the
new dress reform hus been the chief
topic 'of discussion among the girls,
who aver that -the boys in the school
are allowed wide latitude in their se
lection of wearing apparel.
Virgil Prettiman, principal of the
school, discusses the talk caused by
the new rule and says that questions
of good taste In dress frequently arise
In the school.
For months the question of proper
dress has agitated the pupils and In
terested the teachers. A certain
clique of girls has been In the habit
of going to their class In raiment that
verged upon the extremely fashion
able type. Finally a girl showed her
self In a hat that bewildered her col'
leagues. It was a Gainsborough af
fair with untold decorations. She was
told by one of the teachers that she
must not wear such a hat to school
Another girl revealed a coiffure gay
with little nrtiflclul puffs and was
promptly commanded to leave the
surplus attachments at home.
Another young maid demonstrated
geometrical problems on the black
board with her fingers decorated with
brilliants. These Instances aroused h
keen rivalry nmong the girls in the
matter of dress, until the decision was
reached to tell the girls that there
must be moderation In dress. The fo
lowing prohibitive edicts of dress
were Issued: "Merry Widow" hats,
or nats or extremely large propor
tions, or trimmed In a conspicuous
manner. Hair ribbons of too large
size or conspicuous In color. False
hair of any description. "Loita
Faust" colors, "Dutch necks," and
"Mollno bows." Peek-a-boo waists
or walstg with short sleeves. All
bracelets and Jewelry except pins ne
cessary for the clasping of collars.
Gowns of conspicuous colors and ma
terials of extravagant price. Light
shoes, fancy cloth topped, such as
shoes with high heels or fancy but
tons. Thus it will be seen, about all
a girl's little affectations of dress
were forbidden, and the girls In their
'teens are up In arms.

The body of W. J. Archibald, who
disappeared last February, has been
found about a mile ami a half from
where he was last seen alive, says a
special to a Portland paper from Gold
Beach. A continuous search has been
kept up all this time by his partner,
Judd Green. Yesterday, Justice of
the Peace, R. M. Krueger, acting as
coroner, started with four other men
to examine and bury the remains.
On February 29. Mr. Archibald, ac
