Key to All Important Church Of
fices. Baltimore, May 5. From all parts
of America and from foreign lands,
clergymen and laymen of the Metho
dist Episcopal church are thronging
Into Baltimore today, and during the
remainder of the month Methodist
eyes In all sections of the world will
be turned toward this -city. The
quadrennial general conference, which
will be opened tomorrow, Is one of
the most Important religious Institu
tions In existence. It holds the keys
to all the Important offices of the
church, Including the bishoprics, and
editorships and the secretaryships, and
is the supreme and only law-making
body of the denomination.
One of the most Important subjt'ets
to come before the conference will be
that of restoring a time limit to pas
torates. Several of the largest con
ferences, including New York and
Baltimore, have declared In favor of
the restoration of a time limit, and
there is strong sentiment In other
parts of the country in favor of
such action. The present plan has not
Inured to the permanence of the pas
toral relation, or to the stability of
the ministry; Indeed in some cases
congregations have been more restive
than they were under the three-year
or the five-year limit. Then, if there
were dissatisfaction with the minis
ter, they had only to wait a definite
time before a change would come au
tomatically. Now they have to give
expression to their desire for a change
at the quarterly conference, when the
question of continuing the various
pastoral relations comes. up. More
over, the very agitation of the possi
bility of a change as a part of the
routine program of the quarterly con
ferences sometimes helps to beget dls
satislactlon and so the local minister
In some cases comes to dread the
meeting at which he knows the ques
tion Is to be raised.
The practical outcome often Is that
men stay less than five years and
often less than .three years, and so
the general restlessness of the church
es and the uncertainty of the minis
try arp not to any extent alhiyed by
thA absence of all time llmlflLflons. Of
course where relations between pas
tor and people are mutually satisfy
ing and there are many such In
stances In Methodist aswell as In
other churches any time limitation
whatever Imposed by the general con
feience is resented and heretofore the
strong city churches, thus situated,
usually found a way of retaining their
mlnlnsters from period to period.
May Remove Amusement Ban.
Another Important question Is the
proposed repeal of the discipline stat
ute which forbids dancing, card-playing
and theater-going, on penalty of
excommunication. Such action has
been demanded by the New Tork con
ference. Doubtless the sentiment In the oast
generally would, favor such action;
while n the west and even In rural
districts of New England, it would
be viewed with considerable alarm,
as being a concession to worldllness
quite foreign to the spirit of the
Methodist church. In the large cit
ies the rule Is already practically dls-rega-ded
and the New Tork confer
ence delegates simply want to make
the rules tally with accepted usage,
thinking that In this day of ethical
awakening, the church ought to
square its professions to Its actual be
havior by its profession.
It Is a cheering showing which the
official statistics for the Inst four
years make. The Increase In mem
bers U 374,338, or an average of
nearly nlnty thousand a year, while
432 new churches have been added. to
the list this year. This quite sustains
the reputation of the church acquired
through the famous remark of the
late Chaplain McCabe to the effect
that the Methodist church built a new
edifice every day In the year.

Chicago, May 4. Chicago anar-
ichlsts will attempt to hold an open
Jair mass meeting tonight to com
memorate the anniversary of the
Haymarket Square riot In Chicago,
May 4. 1886. It Is likely that the po
lice will attempt to break up the
the meeting, aYid a repetition of the
Union Square riot in New York is
feared. Seven policemen were killed
and about 60 persons injured in the
famous Haymarket affair. A monu
ment marks the spot where the police
men fell and the anarchist sympa
thizers have also erected a monument.
It Is In the vicinity of that memorial
to their dead "heroes" that the reds
hope to hold onight's demonstration.
The Chicago riot of May 4, 1886,
which culminated in the throwing of a
bomb and the firing of revolvers at
the police by the socalled anarchists
was the result of socialistic leaders.
Serious rioting had occurred the day
before In consequence of the strike
of the railway freight handlers and
the efforts of other men to replace
them.
An open air meeting was called by
the leaders In the old Hay Market on
Randolph street. August Spies, A.
R. Porsons and others addressed the
crowd in inflammatory language.
While the latter was speaking four
patrol wagons, filled wfth policemen,
were seen approaching.
Three bombs were suddenly thrown
among the police. They exploded In
stantly and five policemen fell and
many policemen and socialists were
wounded. The police opened fire with
their revolvers upon the crowd and
the rioters returned their fire, also
with revolvers A desperate fight fol
lowed, but the police at length clear
ed the ground.
Two policemen were found to be
dead, five mortally wounded and 24
dangerously wounded.
Of the socialistic leaders, two
brothers, named Spies. Samuel Field-
en, Michael Schwab, Adolph Fischer
George Engel, Albert R. Parsons. Os
car Weeber and Louis Ling were ar
rested. The original bomb thrower,
supposed to be one Schnaubelt, was
never caught. Ling committed suicide
In prison by blowing the top. of his
head off with a small bomb. August
Spies, Fischer, Engel and Parsons
were hanged as Schnaubel's accom
pllces November 11. 1887. Flelden
and Schwag were sentenced for life
and Neebe for IS years.
For many years a fierce controver
sy has been waged over the justice of
the execution of Spies, Fischer, Engel
and Parsons. In a book on the sub
ject the late Governor Altgeld of 1 1 1 i
nols, declared that the hanging of the
reds was nothing short of legal mur
der. Many other prominent legal au
thorltles have expressed the same
opinion, while others equally eminent
have defended the Justice and legality
of the sentence.

17 Inbound, on the Jefferson avenue
line of the Tacoma Railway & Powei
company, got beyond control of Mo
torman A. W. Williams on a steep
hill at South Twenty-seventh street
and Jefferson avenue at 12:35 this
morning, and plunged over a 200-foot
embankment, carrying with It Con
ductor H. J. Bond and E. G. Gordon,
the only passenger aboard. Motor
man Williams, as the car failed to
take the curve near the foot of the
hill, was pitched out of the door at
the left side of the car and thrown
violently against a wooden blacksmith
shop, but escaped serious Injury.
The conductor and passenger re
mained Inside the car as It took Its
plunge down the embankment and
rested within a' few feet of the North
ern. Pacific tracks. Bond received an
ugly scalp wound, a deep cut near the
outside corner of his right eye and a
terrible shaking up. Gordon es
caped miraculously with only a slight
glass cut upon the hand. Both Bond
and Gordon were sent to a hospital.
