Splllman'a work as umpire In the
game Thursday was first class.
Parkes' work In left field was sen
sational. In the sixth he grabbed
O'Brien's low line drive, throwing to
Shockley, who threw to Collins, com-
pletfpg a triple and retiring the side.
Conrad had his hand badly hurt
in Wednesdays game by a tip foul
and yesterday Baker went behind the
bat, where he did fine work and with
a little more experience will make a
fine back atop.
Taliaferro pitched a good game
and will be with the team- as one of
the regular pitchers. .
Van Houten can certainly clout the
ball, getting five hits out of eight
times up In the two games.
Pendleton has a bunch of hitters
with the 1908 team and they will
break up many a game before the sea
son closes.
La Grande has shown great Im
provement since they played here and
now has a strong lineup.
Manager Lorlmer should be con
gratulated for his untiring efforts to
land a good team for Pendleton. He
has the confidence of every one of his

Tohunga.
From New Zealand comes the follow
ing; weird yarn:
"The tobunga (native magician) waa
even credited with the power, of In
fluencing the dead. The present writer
was a witness of the following Inci
dent: A branch of the Arawas, the
tribe of tuu dlHtrlct of Rotorua, being
at war, bad suffered defeat, and one
of their braves had-been brought home
dead. The vanquished sought at once
to find out by some omen connected
with the dead chief whether they
would lie successful In their next en
counter. The tohungu was requested
to procure the desired omen, the peo
ple squatting In a ring about the bier.
Advancing a few paces from the dead
body, the priest began to recite a
powerful Incantation, intent on mak
ing the deceased give some sign, the
eyes of all present being fixed on the
slain warrior. Presently the corpse
waa observed to move slightly to one
aide, on which a great cry of Joy rose
from the people. The movement waa
interpreted as a sign of future victory.
This feat was often performed by the
tobunga of olden times." Chicago

Washington. May 2. Two delegates
to represent the republicans of Alas
ka In the Chicago convention will be
elected nt a territorial convention .to
be held at Ketchikan today. Advices
from the land of snow and gold state
that the delegation will probably be
pledged to Secretary Taft.
Six delegates had already been
elected when the republican national
committee met In Washington last
December, but by the terms of tthe
call they were declared to have been
prematurely chosen, and Alaska was
told that no delegate from that ter
ritory would be seated at the conven
tion until others were named. The
call further stipulated that only two
would be seated Instead of six.
As the six delegates had been In
Instructed to vote for Secretary Toft
their rejection was received with Jub
ilation by the exponents of the secre
tary, who saw a loss of four votes to
him and the possibility that Alaska
could not elect her allotted two dele
gates In time to be represented at the
convention. They realized that an
election in Alaska la a much differ
ent and more difficult matter than a
short walk to the polls In the United
States, and some hope was expressed
that having once gone on record, the
Alaskans would be content to forgo
another election. But In this hope
they did not reckon with the deter
mination of the Alaskans to exercise
their rights of ballot and the caliber
of Thomas Cale, the territorial dele
gate In congress, who holds strong
views as to the Interest his people
should take In national politics.
Mr. Cale believes that the Alaskans
prize the right of ballot more highly
than any other Americans and that
the two new delegates will be Instruct
ed for Secretary Taft unless a light
vote somewhat changes the situation.
Mr. Cale Is a Vermonter by birth, but
has lived in . Alaska 10 years and Is
serving his first term la congress. He
was elected on a non-partisan ticket,
although he is more closely allied
with the republicans than the demo
crats, and Is listed in the former cov
umn.
The Chicago City Railway company
has paid to the city $863,349. this be
ing 55 per cent of the earnings of the
lines during the last year, the percent
age due the city under the new franchise.

covered with sagebrush on March 15th. They cleared the
.land and put GO acres into potatoes. It was as dry as is usual
in that section, except as to winter rain moisture in the
around. The first water from' the ditch went upon these
