I am told that W. T. Shaw, of Free

have the whole fleet, leaving Monte
rey In the cold. Thereupon Monte
rey citizens got buBy. They set forth
that their town was entitled to as
much consideration as Santa Cruz;

FLEET TO DIVIIE.
Rival Towns of Santa Cruz and Mon
terey o Entertain.
San Francisco, April 30. Officers
and men of the Pacific fleet entered
today upon the glorious wlndup of
their entertainment by the people of
Santa Barbara and tomorrow will find
the mighty battleships again headed
northward with the ports of Santa
Cruz and Monterey as their objective
points. These are rival towns, and
as the ships of the fleet will be divid
ed between them, each will seek to
outdo the other In the lavlshness of
Its celebration. It was originally
plnnnedto have the entire fleet ren
dezvous at Santa Cruz but the people
that In any event Santa Cruz had not
the necessary facilities to entertain
all the fleet, either In Its harbor or In
Its hotels.
Messages flew back and forth be
tween Washington and the rival towns
Monterey put up a strong fight and
gained Its point. Hence each town
will receive half the ships for the full
period of the scheduled stay.

Dcxcciiduiit of Men Who Wed and
Died for America.
Buffalo, N. Y., April 30. Men
whoso ancestors fought and bled and
died during the "times that tried
men's souls" gathered In Buffalo to
day by the hundreds for the nine
teenth annual congress of the Sons
of the American Revolution. Among
the delegates arc many men of great
prominence, who have attained to
even greater fame than did their fore
fathers In the stirring days of 1776.
From every state and territory, from
Hawaii and even from Europe the
Sons of the Revolution have come
nnd every hour .of their three days'
stay In Buffalo will be taken up with
important business meetings , ban
quets, receptions and addresses.
A meeting of the trustees of the na
tional society was held this morn
ing In the Iroquois Hotel, followed
by a reception to the visitors by the
members of the local chapter. Ad
dresses of welcome were made by
Mayor J. N. Adam, on behalf of the
elty of Buffalo, and by officers of the
Buffalo chapter. A business session,
devoted principally to reports from
the national officers, followed the re
ception. An automobile excursion was
the feature of this afternoon's pro
gram. The election of national offi
cers will be held tomorrow. A ban
quet will be held tomorrow evening,
and an excursion to Niagara Falls on
Saturday.
The National association now num
bers about 20,000 members. Every
state has Its society and In addition
to the chapters in Paris and Hawaii,

Two Women Arrested for Swindling
Blind Woman Out of $20,000.
Denvur, April 30. Leonora Pierce,
aged 19, and Miss Greyeta Fulmer,
aged 22, were arrested In this city
today, charged with having obtained
nearly 120,000 from Mrs. Harriet A.
Crowe, 67 years old and blind, by
false pretenses. Mrs. Crowe, who is
the widow of a former prominent
Ijuslncss man of Dillon, Mont., was in
troduced to Mrs. Pierce about a year
ago by a spiritualist. Mrs. Pierce, It
is said, claimed she could restore
Mrs. Crowe's sight by spiritual treat
ment and on three different occasions
it is charged, obtained from her $5,
000 In fees for her services. Miss
Fulmer Introduced Mrs. Pierce and
they would talk to Mrs. Crowe for
hours at a tLme, Inducing her to be
lieve she was receiving sight. Re
cently Mrs. Crowe's suspicion became
aroused and her attorney caused the
arrest.
Died Hard.
An unknown stranger, well dresed,
committed suicide .Saturday afternoon
In a room of the Leland lodging house
at Missoula, Mont., firing two bullets
Into his brain, either one of which it
Is believed was sufficient to have
caused instant death, and actually
pulled the trigger of his gun a third
time, but the cartridge missed fire.
While attempting to blow up a
mouse's nest with powder, Frank
Spallinger, aged 15, of Dayton, Wash.,
was terribly Injured, one eye being
practically ruined.
Shot Neighbor's Stock.
J. N. Jacobson, a rancher living
near Coqullle, was arrested and bound
over to the circuit court with a 200
bond for shooting a neighbor's stock
which was bothering his fields, but
which was In the road at the time he
shot. Several men saw the act. He
killed one horse and wounded an
other, besides several cattle.

A. Montenegrin, believed to be the
fourth member of the gang respon
sible for the death of Marshal Miller
at Kent. Wash., recently, was arrest
ed at Cle Elum Sunday. He will be
taken to Kent today for Identifica
tion. The man gave his name as An
ton Cwrcarlous, but his description Is
said to answer that of Bosovlch, one
of the gang. He was found In a box
car and was armed.
