country Is growing rapidly. Great
pieces of land are checked off and
are growing fine cropi thl spring,

When newcomers can see the water
and what the soil will produce, they
are almost sure to Invest, and that
their money Is being well Invested
be proven.
The few windy days caused sand to
blow in the ditches In places, but no
serious damage was done, and the
country looks as good as before.
Totatoes are up and looking fine
where they were planted early this
spring. Great patches of alfalfa,
onions, potatoes and other crops can
be seen on every hand.
Attend Boost Meeting.
Those from here who attended the
booster meeting In Pendleton Monday
night, state that they expect to see It
result In much good for all parts of
Umatilla county. The people must
wake up to the fact that the advan
tages are here, and they must boost
to make It win.
Nearly everybody was out to the
dam last Sunday to witness the game
of ball between Echo and the "Dam
boys, and to witness the celebration
of the Greeks In honor of their Eas
ter, which was a very novel sight.
Work Goes On.
Work on the project Is progressing
very satisfactorily, and It Is reported
that the work on the dam will be
practically complete by July 15, Is not
sooner. Where water has been run
through the ditches In the Hermlston
unit all has been satisfactory, and the
settlers will be furnished with all the
water they desire, for this season,

Echo, April St. That the bee In
dustry In this section of Umatilla
county will be conducted on a large
scale Is now a certainty. Several
men who have Invested In lands near
Echo of late are having bees shipped
In, and they say they expect to make
It a paying proposition. Among
them are M. Townsend and T. J. Bar-
ringer. They have a great many
hundred stands out at this time, and
expect to get more. The vast amount
of alfalfa raised about here, the cli
mate and general conditions are the
best that could be desired for the bee
Industry.
Echo Has Market Day.
Echo had her flrt market day Sat
urday and J1080 changed hands,
which is considered very good for the
first attempt at a sales day. There
were a number of horses, some cattle,
poultry and farm Implements sold.
These sales will be held regularly
once a month In the future.
Good Price for Cattle.
A number of cattle shipments have
been made from here of late. Five
carloads have Just gone out which
brought five cents per pound. Sev
eral shipments have been made of
late, which brought five cents,
among those selling being Jesse
Moore. Frank Sloan, Hugh Stanfleld
and Robert Stanfleld. The .catle are
being pretty well cleaned up, how
ever, and there will not be many more
for the market this spring.
Employ Teachers.
At the last meeting of the Echo
school board L. W. Keller, who has
been principal of the public school
here for the past two terms, was re
elected for the next term, beginning
next September. Miss Verna Van
Vranken, of Milton, was elected for
the third and fourth grades, and MIm
Mayme Rlppey has been re-elected
for the primary department. The as
sistant principal, and a teacher for the
fifth and sixth grades will be elected
at a meeting of the board which will
be held this evening.
Move Shearing Plant.
After shearing many thousand
head of sheep at the White House, a
short distance from here, the plant is
being moved to Nolln today, where
as many more thousand head will be
clipped. There are 60 men at work
at this plant, which Is being operated
by Jake Wattenebrger of Heppner.
This plant will shear 150,000 head
this season. Wool Is now being stor
ed In the warehouses, and the sheep
men expect that it will be a few
weeks at least before any wool sales
are' made.
W. H. Daughtrey of the Umatilla
Ranch company, has returned from
Portland, where ha has been
some days on a business trip.
R. E. Ward has purchased four lots
from J. H. KoonU, and It Is his lnten
tWm to build on them. The lots are
located near the town.
Mrs. Emma Boyd has purchased the
house and lot of C. 5. Mudge and she
expects to make this place her home.
Mrs. Irvln of Pendleton, has pur
chased a lot on Bridge street from
A. I Esteb.
The city has advertised for bids to
grade some of, the principal streets
in the town.
A mass meeting was held at the re
corder's ofice last evening for the
purpose of organizing a baseball i
team.
Echo Represented.
t-cno was well represented at the
Booster meeting In Pendleton Mon
day evening, and it is the honest
opinion of those who attended that
the meeting will result In much good
for the county. Nine went from
here purposely to attend tho meet
mg. and Attorney Frank J. Shelton
Is said to have made one of the best
speeches of the evening. Echo

The Greek section men who are at
work in this vicinity had a barbacue
