writes the following entertaining ac
count of the first appearance and
subsequent career In Oregon of the
late E. H. Clark, the well known
woolbuyer who died In this city last
week. That Mr. Clarke was always
gentleman of fine sentiments and
high Ideals Is shown by Mr. Maddock':

About 30 years ago, on a wellkept
horse, there rode Into Heppner a typ
leal New Englander, arranged with
fine taste In the .habiliments of an
English huntsman. His high boots,
with a glossy shine, were particularly
noticeable to the people about the
late Hon. J. L. Morrow's store, the
first building erected In town.
This man, fresh from the city, was
E. H. Clarke, a prominent woolbuyer,
whose denth, after three days' sick
ness with pneumonia, at Pendleton,
occurred last week, Monday.
It was E. H. Clark who gave finan
ciai assistance In stimulating the
growth of the woolgrowlng Industry,
especially in Morrow county. More
than one successful woolgrower can
attribute his advancement to money
advanced on growing wool and the
hard sense lectures on better breeds,
