looking fine at this time. Alfalfa is
quite high, and potatoes are well over
the ground In most places. Water Is
running through the ditches In the
HermlBton unit, and everything looks
very favorable for a good year In
every way. Buildings are going up and
Hermiston will continue to grow.
Walla Walla parties who recently
purchased considerable land In this
vicinity are improving the same, and
are very enthusiastic over the pros
pects of the country.
E. C. Palmer, a civil engineer re
cently of Everett, Wash., has purchas
ed lot 4. block 2 In the Kern addition,
and he is now erecting a neat office
building upon It. He is an ezperlenc
ed engineer and expects to locate here
permanently.
Miss Stella Robinson has arrived
here from Kansas City, and has assum
ed the duties of assistant to Postmas
ter William!". Miss Robinson has had
experience in poatofflce work. She Is
a slstpr of Ray Robinson, who has
been here for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Newell left Sat
urday for the east, their destiny being
Eoston, Mass., where they will visit
relatives for a time.
The Hermiston public school soci
ety will give a varied literary program
at the school hall Saturday evening
next for the benefit of the school fund.

ney R. R. Johnson have returned
from the Yakima country, where they
were for several days. Mr. McXaught

who has just sold his residence and
other town property to Charles All
bright for the sum of $9000, has tak
en In exchange from Mr. Albright, a
farm on the north fork of the Walla
Walla river, consisting of 364 acres.
Mr. Anderson expects to make his
home on this farm in the future.
Improving Track.
The Traction company has a force
of men hauling away the rocks and
filling in between the rails with dirt.
The improvement will be appreciated
by every citizen.
To Enlarge Nurseries. .
J. B. Frazler has sold 40 .acres of
land to the Milton Nurseries for a
consideration of $4000. This prop
erty adjolnts the nursery, and will be
used to enlarge the present nursery.
H. E. Noble has sold to O. Q. Pear
son 10 lots In Freewater for $400.
A number of the people In the Mil
ton and Freewater country went over
to the opening of Meador park yes
terday. The lnterurban cars were
crowded all day.
Minerva Literary society is arrang
ing for a picnic to be given in the
near future.
Preparations are being made for
the construction of a cement walk in
front of the M. E. church in Milton.
' THE OWLS IN TROUBLE.
New Brotherlioxl Having Hard Time
to Live In the Northwest.
A. McKeen of Seattle, supreme or
ganizer of the Order of Owls, is In
North Yakima on a mission of more
than local Interest. It is to establish
a nest of the order here and by so
doing to absorb the existing member
ship of the Brotherhood of Owls, says
a Yakima paper.
The Order of Owls Is the parent or
ganization and had Its birth at South
Bend, Ind., some years ago. The
brotherhood Is a Walla Walla move
ment two years old and has the major
part of its membership In this state.
The brotherhood, It is alleged, is an
imitation of the order and has met
considerable success, according to
members of the order, among people
who thought they were becoming
Identified with' the parent body.
Mr. McKeen Is not here to bring
about an amalgamation of the two
orders. His mission Is to organize a
nest of the order and he expects that
this will result in killing the brother
hood local as Its membership will
naturally seek membership In the old
er association.
A meeting of the executive com
mittee of the brotherhood Is to be
held tonight at which there will be a
decision as to the course to be pur
sued. Mr. McKeen comes to North Yaki
ma with letters of Instruction to Z.
