to the assistant postmaster general
at Washington, D. C, asking that
three exchanges of mail each day be
inaugurated between the cities pe
titioning. With the interurban cars
makine hourly trios between these
places, this could be easily done.
Eastern Star.
The local Eastern Star lodge will
entertain a large number of visitors
this evening from the lodges from the
surrounding towns. A special car on
the interurban has been arranged for
bo the Walla Walla lodge can come
over. A very enioyable evening Is
expected.
The Milton Cubs met defeat at the
hands of the Weston ball team Sun
day afternoon, by a score of 13 to 6.
The game belonged to the Milton
team all the way through until the
eighth inning, when the Weston boys
commenced to gain, and the home
team .erned to go to pieces complete

The fruit growers of this section of
the county say the prospects for fruit
nere never better at tills season of
the year. Now that danger of frost
is over and there have been some
good rains, the conditions arc very
flattering. Wheat, aifalfa and other
crops are alf-o looking first class.

ert C. French of the Weston normal
has returned from Condon, where he
went to attend a teachers' Institute.
Mrs. Robert C. French and Mrs.
Crayne were among those from here
who west over to Walla Walla Mon
day evening to attend the concert by
Brs. Patrick Campbell. They enjoyed
themselves very much.
Mrs. P. A. Worthington has arrived
from Portland to visit her mother,
Mrs. Sallng, and other relatives for
a short time.
Mrs. P. J. Harbour who has been
seriously ill Is Improving.
The funeral of Mrs. Sarah J. Tork,
which was held here Monday was
largely attended. The deceased was
31 years of age, and besides her hus
band she leaves six children, one an
Infant only two weeks of age. Be
fore her marriage to Jesse York she
was Miss Sarah Key, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. H. Key of this place. She
had many friends about here, who
have the deepest sympathy for the
bereaved husband and children.,
Professor Thomas Bowman is
teaching in Mrs. Annie McDanlel's
place at the, school. Mrs. McDaniel
has been ill' for several days.
A number of the Weston people
have been at the county seat of late
on business.
The late rains have done wonder
ful good to the growing crops in this
section of the county. The grain Is
looking fine.
"Suicide Uses Deputy's Gun.
Lebanon, Ore.. April 22. W. H.
Beard, one of the best known pioneer
farmers In this part of Linn county,
shot himself In the head at noon to
day, while temporarily Insane. He
seems to have lost his mind Saturday
night, when he left his home about
dark and roamed about the country
until today. He took with him a
Winchester repeating shotgun, and
several neighbors who saw him Sun
day were driven off by threats of be
ing shot. This morning Deputy Sher
iff Green of Lebanon, with a posse
of several men, went out for him.
They found him several miles from
home, In the woods, and Induced him
to get Into a buggy with the deputy
sheriff. When they had gone a short
distance, Beard slipped a 32-callber
hammerless revolver from a side coat
pocket of the officer and before he
could be disarmed had shot three
times, two of which took effect In
the right side of his head near the
ear.

La Grande, Ore., April 22. Consid
erable preparation Is going on here in
anticipation of the visit to La Grande
of Manager Tom Richardson, the
booster from Portland, and a mass
meeting Is being arranged. Aside
from listening to the vim and enthus
iasm of the Portland booster the busi
ness men will organize a new com
mercial club along commercial lines.
There has been considerable dissatis
faction In having athletics and com
mercialism affiliated, and henceforth
the two will be separate. The club
Is affiliated with the defunct building
association, but Is to be reborn next
Wednesday night. Judge Crawford
Is president of the present club.
