HermUton, April 21, Water is now running In all the ditches In the Her mlston unit of the Umatilla project Tests were, made and water had been running on some of the land for tome days, but the water was actually turned from the main canal through the by pass into all the ditches Sun day in the most satisfactory manner. Engineers state that there will be no trouble now for all the settlers to se cure all the water that will be neceS' sary. It can now be turned on to many hundred acres. The engineers are now putting forth every effort to complete the work by the latter part of May. Things are looking particularly bright in Hermls ton at this time. A great amount of tuildlng and other Improvements are' under way, and the settlers are very much encouraged. The real estate dealers report continued sales of land, a, number of new cottages are being erected at this time. Many contracts have been let for new buildings and there promises to be quite a boom in the way of building this spring and summer. Slimmer Excursions. In a very short time Sunday excur sions will be run in from all eastern Oregun points and west of here also, which will Induce mny of the people in dlfftrent parts of the state to come here and look over the conditions. Those who come go away favorably Impressed,, and the people here are making every effort to make It pleas ant for the visitors. These excursions promise to be a great advertisement f ir the Hermlston country. Many of our people have been county seat visitors of late. There promises to be an abundance of watermelons here again this season. Weston, April 21. Considerable in terest is being taken in the 13th an nual reunion of the Umatilla County .Pioneers association, which will be held here May 28, 2$ and 30. It is ixpected that a few thousand peopl will be in attendance each day, and on the last day many politicians will be here, as that will be "Political Day." All the candidates will be given a chance to meet the voters. The dif ferent committees now have the work well under way. The Umatilla county association Is one of the oldest in Oregon, and among its members ar3 one couple residing here, Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle, who have been married 55 years. During the past winter 10 members of the association, all old pioneers, have died. m Many of the farmers in this section are very much interested In mule raising, as they are very useful In the big wheat fields in this county. Last week Amasa Phillips shipped in 1 mules which he sold at good prices. Mr. Philips has Just received five thoroughbred Percherons, three fine young mares and two stallions, from an Iowa breeder, for his farm. These animals cost nearly $1000 each. Prof. Walter Simpson has Just closed a successful term of school at Genesee, Idaho, and has returned to his home on Normal heights. A game of baseball took place Sun day between the Athena Juniors and the Rainbows, a local team. Fine playing resulted on both sides result ing In a score of 10 to 9 in favor of the local team. Constable James Dykes of this place, yesterday arrest ed "Doc" McMInn, who was wanted In Walla Walla for horse stealing. McMInn It Is alleged, obtained a sad dle horse Saturday morning from M. E. Stewart, proprietor of the Walla i Walla livery stable. When he did ' not return Saturday night, a search was started.
