Milton. April 20. Easter was duly
Observed In Milton yesterday at the
different churches, special Easter pro
grams being rendered. The reather
was beautiful and the day wu thor
oughly enjoyed.

The teachers Institute which was
held here Saturdaf for the teacher In
the east end was very successful. An
Interesting and Instructive program
was carried out for the occasion.,
Sells Fine Farm.
O. A. Hobbs has sold his fruit farm
below Milton to Mr. Nelton of Baker
City, for a consideration of $10,000
The place consists of 10 acres and Is
well Improved. Mr. Hobbs has lived
en this place for 17 years.
There was a large attendance at the
meader park dance Saturday night.
The park Is being put in fine shape
for the summer. The regular park
season will open April 26, when all
attractions will be on In full swing.
Miss Gladys New has returned to
North Yakima after visiting relatives
here for a time.
The primary election was very quiet
here, though It seemed to please
every one when the results were made
known.
Mrs. Mary Stanton has sold her
residence property In North Milton,
consisting of two houses and four lots,
to Mr. Banks for $1600. Mrs. Stan
ton expects to go to Portland to live,
after a week's visit with a son at Uma
tilla. Evangelist Maxon has been con
ducting an Interesting series of revi
val meetings at the M. E. church for
the past week, and they will proba
bly continue during the next week.
Professor L. W. Keeler, principal
of the Echo public schools, was a vis
itor here Friday and Saturday. He
took in the teachers' Institute while
here.

died Saturday after an illness of some
weeks from fecart trouble. Besides
her husband, four sons and two
daughters are left to mourn her loss.
Funeral services were held yesterday
at the L. B. church In Weston, by Rev,
w. s. Payne.

Levi and Albert O'Harra have re
turned from Harney county, where
they went with the Intention of tak
ing up lands, and locating there. They
ere not pleased with the present
conditions there, however, and were
glad to return to the Weston coun
try.
Mrs. Crayne and Miss Miller receiv
ed the Reading club Saturday at the
Ladles' hall at the Normal. The Eas
ter suggestion pervaded at the func
tion.
The country about here never look
ed more beautiful at this season of
the year. Since the late rains, the
grain fields have been looking fine,
nd the crop is reported as belnsr in
n excellent condition.

Lands Are Being Cultivated

Hermlston, April 20. Things look
fine In the Hermlston country since
the late rains. Those who planted
largo arnounts of potatoes have them
well ovr the grotiiij at this time, and
they are looking IlSe. Fruit trees,
strawberries and the like which were
set out in large quantities, are look
ing fine, and the growers are very
much encouraged, considering that
this is the first year in most instan
ces. Land continues to sell in large
quantities to people who are contin
ually coming In to locate.
Easter was thoroughly enjoyed In
Hermlston. The churches observed
the day. and the weather was delight
ful giving everyone a chance to get
out.
Many of the Hermlston voters went
to Echo last Friday for the primary.
Two special trains were run from
here.
There Is talk of another hotel being
erected In Hermlston In a short time,
owing to the fact that the accommo
dations are limited.

Force of Men at Work Along the
River.
Freewater, April 20. Active work
is now under way on the repairs to the
banks of the Walla Walla and Turn-alum
rivers in this vicinity to protect
the lands of the farmers from future
floods. Blasting and the like has
been done for days and a number of
men will be employed for some time.

this kind have been held In ail lead
ing cities of the northwest, especially
In Tacoma, Seattle and Portland.
Lovers of flowers In North Yakima
feel that this city should not take a
back seat in this line any more than
any other.
Years ago North Yakima was bar
ren of flowers of any kind and It has
not been until recently that they have
been cultivated to any extent in the
city. Even now there Is a noticeable
lack of posies around city homes, and
those who are Interested dwinra a
rose carnival to be a direct means of
encouraging Interest In the cultiva
tion Of flowers.
New Opera House for Elgin.
J. M. Ashworth of Athena, wus In
Elgin recently looking this field over
with the Idea of building a modern
up-to-date opera house here, says the
Elgin News. He expressed himself
as well pleased with the situation and
stated that It was almost a certainty
that he would build at an early date.
His Idea Is to put up a one story
building either 44x100 feet or 60x100
feet, either brick or frame, but pre
sumably brick, and finish the Inte
rior with a large stuge und all the
accessories necessary to accommo
date the best traveling companies in
the way of dressing rooms, scenery,
etc.
