oughfares by automobiles. The re
sults prove that the modern fast
moving car is the greatest menace
to macadam roads that has ever
made Its appearance.
On some stretches of thorough

where many broad and smooth roads
have been constructed,, the retrogres
sion Is not less than 40 per cent and

for so doing, says the Walla Walla
Statesman.
They have no place of business In
this county and have had none and

Is necessary If they wish to compete
with local merchants.
This annual Influx of buggy ped
dlers representing their goods to be
the best and their terms to be the
easiest. Is declared by dealers to be
one of the greatest menaces the local
trade has to contend with.
Every year they flood the country
with their goods; which they claim
are the best on earth, and yet when
taxes arexpald on these buggies they
swear that 45 of them are worth but
J 800. They canvass the country thor
oughly and with the speech of finish
ed peddlers sell goods to people who
would otherwise patronize home
dealers who handle reliable goods.
Retail dealers as a body cannot take
measures to rid the country of the
pestiferous peddlers and have been
doing all they can to head off their
depredations by other means. The
step of the county attorney Is much
appreciated by all local dealers, of
whatever line of goods.

of Pocatello, Idaho, says a Portland
paper. The arrival in Portland will
be an event of more than ordinary
Importance to the Masonic fraternity
of the city and the Jurisdiction of
Oregon.
The silver emblem Is destined to
Willamette Lodge No. 2 of this city,
and special ceremonies have been ar
ranged for its reception.
The delegation from the Pocatello
lodge consists of William Wallln, P.
M acting W. M.; Rev. P. Murphy,
acting S. W.; D. Worth Clark, acting
J. W., and N. D. Brookheart, present
W. M., acting S. D.
On the evening of Monday, April
20, the trowel will be formally trans
ferred to Willamette Lodge No. 2
The third degree will be conferred by
the masters and wardens of the varl
ous dorges of the city. The grand
officers of the Jurisdiction are ex
pected to be present.
Willamette lodge has prepared a
very handsome souvenir program.
The exercises will be held In the grand
lodge room of the temple, and It is
expected that at least 1000 members
will be present.
