Washington, April 18. Next week
will probably be a quiot one in politi
cal circle, as few important conven
tions are scheduled. Only two state
conventions will be held by the re
publicans, that of Nevada In Wlnne
mucca and of New Hampshire In Con
cord. The former Is set for Monday and
the latter for Tuesday, Delegates fa
vorable to the Taft candidacy are as
sured In Nevada, according to reports
from the Sagebrush state. The ac
tion to bo taken by the New Hamp
shire convention Is n so easily fore
casted, although It Is likely that -an
unlnstructed delegation will be cho
sen. By far the most Important state
, convention of the coming week will
be that of the Illinois democrats, to
be held on Thursday In Springfield.
The Illinois State Central committee,
with only one dissenting vote, has In
dorsed William J. Bryan for the
presidency In the most emphatic
language, and this endorsement will
doubtless receive the sanction of the
state convention.
Massachusetts democrats will hold
their spring caucuses on Wednesday,
and the state convention will be held
In Boston on May 7. Bryan boomers
have made determined efforts to cap
ture the Bay state and apparently
with every hope of success. The at
tempt to arouse Johnson sentiment
In Massachusetts has been a flat fail
ure.
Congrecslonal district conventions
to be held luring the week will have
little effect upon the standing of th
candidates, and, will leave Taft and
Bryan with the leads they have main
tained since the opening of the cam'
palgn.
Secretary Taft will begin the week
in New York,' addressing the meeting
wf the Laymen's missionary move
ment on Monday night Mr. Bryan
will also continue his New York tour
during the week and will deliver sev
eral addresses. '
The. most Important political ban
quel of tho' week will be held here
next Saturday night by the League of
state republican clubs All of the re
publican candidates for the presiden
cy have been Invited and President
will likely deliver a brief address.
' A state election will be held on
Tuesday In Louisiana, when state of
ficers will be elected and several
amendments to the constitution will
be voted on. Jared Y. Sunders was
nominated as gubernatorial candidate
In the recent democratic primaries
and will be elected without serious
opposition.

for the big electric power plant of
the Idaho Consolidated - Power com
pany of thin city at American Falls
were placed yesterday with th Gen
eral Electric company of New York
for early delivery and Installation,
says the Pocatello Tribune. The con
tract was closed by President James
II. Brady and Superintendent Stan
ford with a representative of the
Qeneral Electric company, who with
representatives of the Allls-Cham-bers
company, the Fairbanks-Morse
company .and the Wastlnghouse elec
tric manufacturing company, were In
the olty.
The total weight of the machinery
will be 80.000 pounds and It will be
Installed In the Island power house
of the Idaho Consolidated company
at the falls. Tho present capacity of
the plant Is 2000 horBe power and the
additional Installation will bring the
total to 3000. There are 60,000 horse
ower available nt the falls, awaiting
only the need of larger Installations.
Plans for the co'mplete develop
ment of the falls contemplates the
building of a dam Just nbove them,
which will raise tho water eight feet
and create a largo lake, extending up
the river for several miles, and the
.construction of a third power house
on tho south bank of the river
Th excavation for this station has
been completed for some time and
about $50,000 has been expended on
the station, so that It can be com
pleted in about a year when the oc
casion requires.
The phenomenal growth of the
business of the American Falls com
pany has made Imperative the in
crease of Its plant's capacity, and the
order placed yesterday for addition
al units is merely a step toward ulti
mate development of tho 70.000 theo
retical or 56,000 actual horse power
available at the falls.

In "Tho District Ldader," which

Joseph Howard, writer of "The Um
pire." "Tho Land of Nod," "The Time,
the Place and the Girl," is said to
have achieved his greatest success
thus far.
This appears to be a somewhat
strong assertion to make, taking Into
consideration the fact that all of Mr.
Howard's previous efforts have been
included In the "tremendous hit"
class, but competent critics who have
steu "The District Leader," all agree
that this, the latest creation from the
prolific brain- of the popular song
writer and composer, Is the best thing
he has done.
To pry one familiar with Mr. How
ard's work, this should be all-sufficient.
"The District Leader" differs
from the great majority of so-called
musical comedies In that It has a plot,
not a flimsy, disconnected story, put
in to hold the piece together, but a
strong melodramatic sequence of
events that almie would hold the at
tention of any audience.
Add to this the fact that the play
is plentifully Intersprlrikled with mu
sic representing Mr. Howard at his
best, and some Idea may be had of
the entertaining qualities of "The Dis
trict Leader." Miss Ethel Dovey and
Frederick C Triiesiale 'ea n com

ity to adequately portray the charac
ters In a production said to resemble
both "The Vanderhllt Cup" and "4 5
Minutes From Broadway." Miss
Dovey will be remembered for her

er" she has ample opportunity to
please along the same lines.
The balance of the cast support
Miss Dovey and Mr. Truesdalo In a
manner which Is well calculated to
hrlns forth all of the praise the pro
duction has merited this season.

possess blooded dogs are careful to
see that the tag on the dog's collar Is

About once a week a number of the
animals are killed at the pound and
the remains cremated. The killing Is
done by shooting with a rifle and
rarely does the executioner have to
fire the second cartridge.
Thirty-five animals were kjlled Sat
urday and there are between 12 and
15 more that will go the route this
Saturday unless the owner happens
along and rescues them. The animals
now In the pound have passed their
legal apprenticeship and are eligible
for death, but will probably not" be
dlnpatched until the end of the week.

Rock visitors this week, leaving yes
terday for the country In search of
yearlings, says the Pilot nock Rec
ord. Mr. Matlock snld that he was
in tho market for about 10,000 head
of yearlliiRs and when asked as to
the price he was willing to pay, re
plied that the price would depend
largely upon the quality of tho lambs
offered for snle. In Heppner, he
said, somo purchases had been made
at $2.60, but that sales had been re
ported In other places at $2.25.
In view of tho panic and the fact
that this Is a presidential year the
sheep men of eastern Oregon may
