In the city of Tendleton Ellis won
over Geer by a vote of 4 to 1, while
in the county at large he received
more than a 3 to 1 vote, doer failed
to carry a single one of the precincts
thus far heard from and In four of
those now reported upon he failed to
receive a single vote.
In view of the neck and neck race
eeing run in this county between Ful
ton and Cake It will take the official
count to tell definitely how the coun
ty has gone upon the senatorship.

headquarters this morning, Judge
Cake Is receiving returns, but refuses

Raker City, April 18. H. M. Cake
is leading C. W. Fulton for the sen
ate by 162 this afternoon In Baker
county with but a few outlying pre
cincts to hear from. Geer Is ahead
60 votes at 2 o'clock with a few pre
cincts to' hear from.
Cake and Ellis Carry Union.
La Grande, April 18. Cake and
Ellis carried Union county In yester
day's primaries by strong pluralities.
The vote on senator and congressman
In this county was as follows: Cake
833; Fulton, 505; Ellis, 807; Geer.
442; Shepherd, 129.
Many Complimentary Votes.
Upon both tickets yesterday many
(names were written ln by voters and
several democrats were given gratui
tous nominations. Whether or not
they will accept the Invitations to
run remains to be seen.
C. H. CaFter received quite a num
ber of votes for district attorney
Homer Watts, a' sufficient number to
nominate him for school superintend
ent, while T. C. Frazier of Milton wa
also given the democratic nomina
tion for county clerk.
At Echo, Col. H. G. Newport re
ceived 65 votes for sheriff and he al
so received a few votes for that of
fice In at least one Pendleton pre
cinct. However, Sheriff Taylor also
received many votes for the repub
lican nomination for sheriff.
In North Pendleton he was given
15 complimentary votes; while a
goodly number were cast for him in
the other local precincts. In Pendle
ton precincts he was given In the vi
cinity of 50 votes, but the Judges re
fused to count them, through a mis
apprehension regarding the law.
In several precincts Assessor Strain
also received votes on the republican
ticket, while on the other hand many
complimentary democratic votes were
cast for republican officials having
no opposition.
In eases where a man Is voted for
by members of the opposite party the
votes should be counted for him, ac
cording to District Attorney Phelps,
and if he receives a greater number
of votes than any other man he is en
titled to the nomination, even though
he be of a different political faith.
There is little doubt but that Sheriff
Taylor was given the republican nom
ination also, in which case he will be

Philadelphia, April 18. Pretty
Helen Maloney has lost her efforts to
get the Catholic church to sanction
her marriage with Samuel Clarkson,
a young Englishman-. Today Arch
bishop Ryan has announced this fact.
Bishop Ryan stated that what the
millions and the power of Henry
VIII. could not do 600 years ago, tho
millions of Martin Maloney could not
do today.
The archbishop declared that if a
legal wedding was performed when
she eloped with Herbert Osborne, the
stock broker, no power on earth, not
even the pope, could bring about any
ceremony which the church would
sanction.
Miss Maloney is 22 years old and
strikingly beautiful. In 1905 she
eloped with Herbert Osborne, then a
Princeton student and was married
under an assumed name. They de
clare the marriage was never con
summated and was always consider
ed a joke.
Last October Miss Maloney eloped
with Samuel Clarkson and was mar
ried at Montreal. Now the Catholic
church, of which the Maloneys are
very devout members, refuse to sanc
tion the latter marriage.

Excellent Wool Crop.
The wool clip of the southern part
of Washington is now coining into
North Yakima, and Is reported to be
the best, s far as uallty is concerned,
produced in this state in years. The
quantity is probably not more than
half that of four years ago. The tak
ing In of large areas of former free
range to the forest reserves has re
duced the number of bands of sheep
to a definite figure. Shearing Is now
In progress In Kittitas canyon, states
a recent report. At present the
prices quoted are from 9 to 13 cents
for wool. The lambing season has
been a highly successful one
