we had got almost past hoping for a

Good Prospecte for Stock Show.
All over the Grand Ronde valley
farmers and stockralsers are taking
exceptional Interest In the stock show
and market day, which is to take
place here Saturday, under local man
agement, says the La Grande Ob
server. It is the conservative belief of the
business men who are behind the pro
ject, that 76 blooded animals will be
In the parade, which is to traverse
the principal streets anr avenues of
the city in a spectacular manner Sat
urday afternoon.
A committee appointed by the pro
moters to secure horses and stock fo
the parade, have been out in the
Union-Cove section of the valley and
were extremely successful. The Elgin,
Allcel, Summervllle and Imbler sec
tions are being visited by Messrs. O.
A. Coffin and M. H. Klrtley today.
Ranchers are signing promises to have
their livestock here, without coaxing.
They are enthusiastic over the event.
No Screens for Boise Saloons.
An ordinance was Introduced at the
regular meeting of the city council
Inst evening by Councilman Blomquist
providing for a free and unobstructed
rtew of the Interior of all rooms
where Intoxicating, splrltous, vinous
or malt liquors are sold by virtue of a
license under the city ordinances dur
ing the hours that the saloons or such
places of business are closed and pro
viding for violations, says the Boise
Capital News.
The bill was laid over until the next
meeting of the council Friday even
ing, for final reading and action. The
passage of the ordinance by the coun
cil will be opposed by nearly every
saloon man In the city as under the
provisions of the ordinance alterations
of their respective places of business
will be necessitated In order to con
form with the ordinance, the windows
and doors of nearly all saloons having
stained glass which will be contrary
to the measure if passed.

go to Seattle in the fleet of the United
States, to be there next month, will

the Yakima Republic. The prospects

some time. If they buy, the prices
paid will be higher than those which
have prevailed for some weeks, as po
tatoes are now about the $12 mark

lows, from Barcelona, concerning the
temporary popularity in Spain of a
certain class of American publica
tions: Another strictly American indus
try has been successfully Introduced
Into Spain, namely, the old-fashioned
dime-novel Industry. At all the
newspaper kiosks French transla
tions of the most popular of these
novels have been selling rapidly for
a yoar or more.
The books retail at from 4.1 cents
to about six American cents a copy.
American publishers have recently
asked this consulate to report as to
whether or not this unexpected de
mand for dime-novel literature Is suf
ficiently stable to warrant the Inva
sion of the field on a big scale with
Spanish editions of everything In the
dime novel series.
The consul general says that after
carefully Investigating the matter he
Is compelled to report that there Is
riot much outlook for this literature
in Spain. As a matter of fact, It has
already begun to pall upon the Ju-,
venile Spanish appreciation and dur
ing the past tli i months sales' have
steadily diminished.,
Moreover, with the exception of
Barcelona and Madrid, the reading
public Is not large. In connection
with this mntter It may be said that
the best profits of Spanish publishers
of cheap literature are earned In
South and Central America, and It Is
likely that they have already supplied
those markets with the class of liter
ature above named.

session of the American Pathological
association's convention. A large pro
portion of the 200 members. IncludliiE
the leading bacteriologists and patho
logists of the United States and Can
ada are In attendance. Dr. Alfred S.
Warthin, professor of pathology In the
medical department of the University
of Michigan. Is president of the asso
ciation. The convention will continue
through tomorrow.
The World's Sugar Production
An estimate by the British Board
of Trade of the sugar production of
the world for 1906 makes a total of
14.312,716 long tons, of which 7,
317,472 tons were cane and 6.996,244
tons beet, the production of both
kinds advancing practically nt the
same rate since 1898. In the produc
tion of cane sugar, British India had
the largest output of 2.223,400 tons,
and In beet sugar Germany ranked
first, with an output of 2,362,187 tons.
In consumption of sugar per head
Australia stands first at 129 pounds
the United States coming next with
89 pounds, nnd the United Kingdom
following at 81 pounds.

Northern Pacific railroad company,

ator cars to be constructed at once,"
says the Yakima Republic. '
Mr. and Mrs. Levy are here In their
private cor on their way from St. Paul
to Tacoma. They stopped off In North
Yakima to spend a portion of the day
with Mr. and Mrs. George Donald and
despite the rain were given on auto
mobile ride out through the neigh
boring fruit section, which they enjoy
ed greatly. Their car was attached
to No. 6 west this afternoon.
"We are perhaps unique at this
time," said Mr. Levy, "In that we are
a transportation line which Is pur
chasing new equipment. That cannot
be said of many of the railroads Just
now. We are procuring, as I said, 600
refrigerator cars, and are also arrang
ing for 600 new stock cars and 40 new
passenger . coaches. The refrigerator
cars are built in the east as the fa
cilities for the equipment for such
cars are In that Bectlon of the coun
try. Has Faith in tlie Umatilla.
The Umatilla river, from which
stream comes the Irrlgon water sup
ply, will have at least an average
season's flow, for the snows which
feed it are about normal. So while
there Is a great shortage of water In
the coll from the natural rainfall dis
tricts, we can go .ahead with confi
dence and complacency with out Irri
gating, furnishing the crops here
abouts with all the moisture needed.

have three cars more loaded this even
ing. In all this will make 36 cars
which Mr. McKennon has shipped
during the past few weeks. All were
billed to Missouri and Kansas points.

week to W. A. Smiley for $126. Ed
has a big ranch of 46 acres of the
