Hermlston, April 13 W. W. Pan
key, manager of the Eastern Oregon
Telephone company, state that Her
mlston will be supplied with a cen
tral office which will be ready for
use next Sunday. April 19. The switch
board and all equipment has arrived,
and will be installed as rapidly as
possible. There are about 50 sub
scribers listed with the company, and
the people of this section are glad in
deed to be able to have telephone
connection with the outside world.
Lands are rapidly being improved,
and people are very' optimistic over
what will be done In this vicinity In
the next year. Buildings will go up,
lands will be settled upon and Her
mlston will grow wonderfully In the
next several months.
Messrs. A. W. and E. J. Prann of
Ridgeway, Iowa, have been here vlalt
lng with R. E. Allen, who Is an old
friend of theirs. They will probably
locate here, as they were very favor
ably impressed with the conditions.
People are taking Interest in the
apeclal train which will be run to
Echo next Friday the 17th. the date
of the primary election.
Rev. Walton Sklpworth. presiding
elder of The Dalles district of the
Columbia River conference, will
preach at the Skinner Newport hall
this evening.
A number of tracts of land have
been purchased from the different
real estate dealers of late. All pur
chasers expect to Improve and build
at once.
A number oi Hermiston people have
been county seat visitors of late.
The ladles of the Baptist church
are arranging to serve an Easter sup-

Cold Storage.
Hahn Brothers and W! E. Good
win have purchased a site for the
erection of a suitable building for a
cold storage and Ice plant at this
place. It is the Intention to have the
machinery installed and the plant
ready for operation by the first week
in May.

Milton, April 13. Land continues
to sell In this vicinity, and sales will
jo on, as this Is one of the most
prosperous farming sections of the
northwest. A. M. Elam has Just dis
posed of a portion of his fruit tract
west of town. Ten acres went to H.
M. and J. C. Couch for $1800, and 10
acres to J. S. Long for $1350.
O. L. Fields has sold 20 acres north
from Milton a A. Hill of Waitsburg
for 13000.
Matt Mosgrove, the well known
Milton merchant, has gone to Port
land upon a short business trip.
T. G. Conrad purchased from L. T.
Harmon 160 acres on Pine creek for
which he paid the sum of $5000.
B. E. Harder was a recent business
visitor to Baker City.
Professor R. J. Davis, who now has
charge of the Nysaa public schools,
has been here upon a short visit to
friends.
O. M. Smith, a recent arrival from
Montana, has bought out the dray
business of Abe Hudson.
Mrs. Templa Joljy of Denver, has
been the guest of her sister, Mrs.
Bennie Osborne, for a few days.
The fruit trees are looking fine in
this section of the county. Peach
trees are In bloom, and the country Is
looking very beautiful at this time.
Mrs. Charles Barr, formerly Miss
Jennie Dykes, has been here from
Pasco visiting relatives for some
days.
Candidates come In thick and fast
and politics continues to be the main
topic of conversation.

Boise to Have SI 00,000 Park.
Within a short time by special elec
tlon. to the voters of Boise will be sub
mitted the proposition of voting $100.
000 in bonds for a city park, says the
Roise Canital News. The ordinance
calling for the election is already be
ing prepared by the city attorney and
the matter Is causing considerable
comment. A short time ago the city
was presented with 40 acres along the
banks of the Boise river extending
from the Eighth street bridge to the
Broadway bridge on the north.
The property Is centrally located
and Is an excellent site for a park, but
for a city, which in a few years, will
have over 50,000 Inhabitants, the tract
was not considered large enough and
negotiations were made for the pur
chase of two tracts on the north, one
known as the Broadway park con
sisting of 64 acres, which can be pur
chased for $26,000. and the Brock
tract adjoining It, consisting of 40
acres, which can be had for $12,000.
The owners of these tracts have
agred to accept city bonds for all but
$4000 of the purchase price, and the
interest on $100,000 bonds, counting
the Inhabitants of Boise at 20,000,
would amount to less than 25 cents
each per annum.
The matter of purchasing this land
has been taken up and discussed by
the Columbia club and practically re
ceived the indorsement of that organization.

Helix, April 13 The Helix country
is looking very fine at this time, and
the farmers think the wheat Ih in ex
cellent condition, though a little rain
would be approclated, as some of the
land is quite dry. A dry spell at this
time Is better than later on, how
ever.
A. B. Montgomery recently pur
chased a fine Maxwell runabout. A
number of the farmers in this section
expect to invest In automobiles this
year.
Mr. and Mrs. John King of Rltz-
vllle, Wash., have been recent visitors
here.

playing a fine line of spring milli
nery here this spring.
Wm. Bayne of Canada, has been
here visiting with hie brother, Henry
Bayne, for some days He likes this
country very much.

Williamson Shearing Plant Burned.
J. N. Williamson's shearing plant,
which is about six miles above the C
Sam Smith ranch, on the Ochoco, was
burned to the ground this week by
some unknown person. The house on
the ranch and a camp were also burn,
ed. A fire was started in the barn
but It did no damage as It soon went
out after being started. A kerosene
bottle was found near the ruins, which
goes to show It was done by some
person who went there for the pur
pose of doing the work. Mr. Wil
liamson estimates his loss at $2500.
