the Farmers' Educational and Protec
tive union, the farmers of Nez Perce
prairie will save not less than 116,000
on their grain sacks, says an Item from
Nez Perce. Although the price of
grain sacks is considerably lower than
last year the union has succeeded in
securing a larger reduction because
of the sharp competition of grain bag
companies. Last year the farmers
used 400,000 sacks for which they plau
11 cents each, but the bids for the
same quality of bags this year indicate
that they will cost less than 7 cents
each.
The bids were openod but no con
tract will be let as the union hopes to
secure a still further reduction in the
price as several other bids are yet to
be submitted. Sharp competition for
the business has caused price cutting
which will result In a saving for the
growers. Besides dlscuslng the sack
question the local union Initiated 26
new members and a number of appli
cations were received. It is believed
that the Nez Perce union will become
the largest local in the northwest.

In Salem yesterday was completed
the first $10,000 of a proposed mil
lion dollar endowment fund for Wil
lamette university.
Thanks nre due to (he loyal people
of Salem, for they pledged $30,000
of tho $100,000, a much larger sum
than was contributed by any other
city, excepting Portland, and hot con
tributions were mostly by a few weal
thy men. No one In Salem gave more
than $1000, excepting J. C. Thompson
whose gift Is now counted at $1000,
net, but will probably realize $2600,
says the Salem Statesman.
This $100,000 endowment fund
means great things for old Willam
ette. It means a $250,000 endow
