Monday will be the last day of the
period during which half payment of
taxes may be made at the sheriffs of
fice. After that date those who have
not paid their taxes In full or half
will become subject to the penalty of
10 per cent and in addition Interest at
the rate of 12 per cent per unnuin
will be charged.
Til- half payment period lasts from
M uch 1 0 to the first Monday In
April. During that time some tax
payers have paid half their taxes and
will wait until October to pay the re
mainder. By this course they have
the use of their money until fall and
are not subject to the penalty. How
ever, many of those paying taxes dur
ing the past two weeks have paid the
amount! in full, according to the men
in the sheriff's office. For the most
porj these are people with small tax
payments and they pay the entire
amount now so as to save the trouble
of making another payment In the
fall.

Miss Ida Clough of Boston, a grad
uate of Bryn Mawr. who la studying
In Berlin for a doctor's degree, wish
ed to use a Greek volume of the year
12G5, which is In the National li
brary at Paris, says a cable from
Berlin.
The directors of the National li
brary wrote a note o this effect to
the German ministry of education.
The ministry wrote to the foreign of
fice, and the latter wrote to the Im
perial chancellor. The Imperial
chancellor sent the request to the
French ambassador to Germany, and
then It was up to France.

The Pastime, the popular Main
.nreet picture show, had a fine change
of moving pictures yesterday, and
this will continue until .Sunday, when
there will be another change. The
Pastime management announces some
ery attractive pictures for the next
week.
Brewers stln al star.
The Brewers will appear at.the Star
theater again tonight and tomorrow
r.ight in an entire change of program.
These colored artists have drawn good
crowds In the past week. Some good
moving pictures and Illustrated songs
have also been shown.
At tlie Eagle Show shop.
The Eagle Show Shop has a fine
change of moving pictures today,
among the best yet seen here. Some
ore funny, some sensational and some
educational. This change will continue
over until Monday, when there will be
another change. The Eagle has been
attracting the usual big crowds the
patl wfek.
The 1908 meeting of the Umatilla
County Pioneer association promises
to be the most successful and enter
taining ever held. Every preparation
is being made by the people of Wee
ton to entertain her visitors and an
elaborate program will be given.
The date of the meeting is May 28,
29 and 30 and the last day will be
designated as "political day," on
which all the candidates are expected
to make a final rally and speech
making finish.
This is the thirteenth annual meet
ing of the association and the mem
bership Is Increasing each year. As
a meeting of the people of Weston

AGED RANCHER SPICIDES.
Body Found Several Days After Deed

Condition.
John M. Stewart, an aged rancher
who had a homestead In the old rlvei
bed 10 miles west of PrlnevllU,
committed suicide while alone at his
cabin, and the badly decomposed
bo,v was found by Deputy Sheriff
Hen Jones on Wednesday of last
week, says the Madras Pioneer. An
empty bottle bearing a laudanum la
bel was found on a stand near the
bed. From the condition of the body
It was apparent that Stewart had been
dead for a week or 10 days. A horse
was found tied in a stable near the
house n a most pitiable condition for
want of food and water.

will be given by June Hive No. 10 of
the Lady Maccabees in this city, will
be given on Thursday evening, April
9, Instead of April 11, as stated last
evening. Mrs. David Rogers and Mrs.

event Is promised.

George S. Sliepherd Meets People of
Umatilla County In His Campaign
for High Orflc-.
George S. Shepherd, Multnomah's
candidate for congress from the sec
ond district, arrived in the city this
morning and has been busy meeting
the voters today.
Mr. Shepherd is an enthusiastic
open river worker and Is making his
campaign on this issue. He is thor
oughly familiar with Columbia river
und coast conditions and feels that
he would be uble to present the needs
of the district ably and lucidly before
congress.
He will visit the different counties
of the district and is confident of se
curing good support from all parts
of the district, notwithstanding the
fact that Congressman W. R, Ellis
and T. T. Geer, both of eastern Ore
gon, are in the field. 4

assassination at the hands of the
emissaries of the all powerful "high
binders," Llm Bin fled from that city
on Monday and sought refifke In
North Yakima, says the Yakima Re
public. According to Wu Long, a
Chinaman who has been hero tor
some time. Llm Bin still is In the city
or neighborhood, but his exact
whereabouts are not known or are
being purposely concealed by his
friends.
Llm Bin's danger Is by no meana
imaginary, for telegraphic Informa
tion reached the city today to the ef
fect that two Chinamen selected for
the mission of murder by the com
mittee of the secret society In Port
land, are on their way here, sworn to
put to death the man who las offend
ed the association.

A petition asking that Freewater
and some of its surrounding territory
be taken from the Milton school dis
trict and made Into a new district
was filed with the county superin
tendent today. The petition asks that
all of Freewater, the country lying
north of that town, a part of district
22 and also a part of district 108 be
made Into the new district
It Is understood that the Miltonites
will oppose the division of their dis
trict and that a remonstrance from
them will be forthcoming in u short
time.
At a session of the boundary board
held this morning some territory in
district 23 was transferred to district
84 in accordance with a petition re
cently filed.

The cut In wages of operatives ot
the cotton factories of New Bedford,
Mass.. announced to begin this week
has been delayed until April 13. The
cut will affect 26,000 workers.
