Oregon sheepmen are now out with
a protest against any reduction in thj
number of sheep to be alloted on the
forest reserves in this state this year
and they hope that their argument on
thu subject will prevail with the gov
ernment. According to the sheepmen,, they
fed that the present condition of the
sheep market should deter the for
estry' people from making any reduc
tions this year. While they hold that
sheep should now be worth as much
or more than in the past, the financial
condition of the country has tended
to put the market "off for a time.
Consequently they do not want to be
forced to sell now, at a sacrifice.
Under the plans of the ' forestry
bureau a cut of from 10 i3 ?0 per
cent is to be made In the number 01
sheep allowed on the Oregon ranges
the coming summer. Should this plan
be caYrled out many sheepmen will
have good reason fo robjectlng to a
cut. though th-'y say that if market
conditions wore normal they would
have 110 serious objection to a reduc
tion. The protest against the reduction

mittee at the Oregon Woolgrowers' as
sociation and President J. N. Burgess
has called a meetlng-of the commit

Judge T. P. Gllllland In hit office at

Both the young people are well
known In this city and have many
friends. The groom was formerly a
student in the high school and Is now

9, A. Hawks Wants Pay for Honte
Klllel In Runaway During Fight.
As an aftermath of the fight lhat
occurred at Nolln recently between
J. A. Hawks and A. W. Slusher, a suit
for $215 damages has been brought
against Slusher by Hawks.
The complaint in the case was filed
early this morning and in The same
Hawks alleges that on March 6 ".the
defendant did wrongfully and unlaw
fully beat and strike the Dlalntlff on
the head and face, thereby causing
the plaintiff to fall to the, ground."
He further declares that at the time
he, Hawks, was holding his horse.
which was hitched to a buggy ana
that the animal became frightened
and ran away. The horse ran over
a bluff and was killed, while the bug
gy was demolished. He sues for
$150 damages for trie horse: $50 for
the buggy and $15 for the harness.

summer. He recently sold his barber

Walla Walla Is now seeking a ball
game for April 26, at which time the
new ball park there will be opened.

Rt. Rev. Robert I.. Paddock, mis
sionary bishop of eastern Oregon,
was In Portland yesterday. He left
for eastern Oregon this week to take
up his active work for the Episcopal
church. His purpose In visiting
Portland was to take up certain ques
tions with Bishop Charles Scaddlng,
of the Oregon diocese, says a Port
land paper.
His first "circuit" will Include
Heppner, Weston, Canyon City, On
tario and Burns. Following the dio
cesan nnd general northwestern con
ventions of the Episcopal church,
here In Portland next month, which
Bishop Paddock will attend, the bish
op will Invade the most sparsely set
tled communities of the state on a
tOUr that will consume probably sev
eral months.
On the June trip he will spend some
time at Prlnevllle, Bend, Silver Lake
and Klamath Falls and other places
that have preachers, and later- those
regions which are without spiritual
leaders.
