IK'rs in Lnrga Cities on the Coast
Portlnml, Still Francisco, Oakland

NiunlM-rs Out of Service.
Figures compiled at the request of
E. H. Hurrinmn show the Brent extent
to which Pacific coast shippers are
delaying the unloading of freight
enrs urgently needed to move the
record-breaking freicht traffic on the
Southern rnclfic. The records of the
principal California and Oregon ship
ping centers show that since April
1 an average of 3632 cars per day
were held overtime for unloading on
the Harrlmnn lines in this territory.
From thnt date to May 1 conditions
grew rapidly wo-se, but ' the June
records show considerable Improve
ment -Owing to the railroad's Insist
ence that cars be released.
Portland shippers on April 1 were
holding. 674 cars, which they had In
creased to 823 cars-on May 1 ,and re
duced to 218 by June 11. San Fran
cisco, which had 1860 tied up April
1, was holding 2358 May 1. and 1640
June 12. Oakland's record was" 494
for April 1. 492 for May 1, and 365
the middle of June. Sacramento and
Los Angeles shippers are holding 150
more cars now than on May .1.
The average number of cars so
withheld from service ngregate over
20 per cent of the total now equip
ment bought by the Union Pacific and
Southern Pnclflc for delivery up to
July 1. This new equipment amounts
to 8000 cars for the latter system and
7000 for the Union Pacific lines.
The advantage shippers would de
rive from this large addition to the
Harriman lines' equipment, Involving
an outlay of $31,000,000, Is materially
offset by shippers' delays In unload
Ig and releasing cars.
Owing to the freight congestion
four months ago when the southern
Pacific was loading 40 cars a day into
San Francisco. In excess of the num
ber of cars unloaded, warning was
given that embargoes or Increased
demurrage charges would be neces
sary If cars were not released more
promptly.
These warnings have been repeated
more lately In other quarters, and the
utmost effort Is being made by the
company to secure the co-operation of
shippers In getting the freest use of
Its cars, and to make shippers realize
that the use of freight cars as stor
age warehouses Is unfnlr both to the
railroad and to other shippers. .

Tuesday of last weeks agents of
Parks Bros., grocery firm of San

siding In this community 4800 pounds
of groceries, valuing approximately
$3,000. These figures may seem un
reasonable but a Recorder reporter
knows them to be correct. In fact
they are rather underestimated If
anything. All the afternoon thut day
there was a constant stream of teams
coming from the car with their pur
chases, among them being some of
the most substantial and well to do
farmers of our community. Others
were men, who perhaps are not quite
so well to do and who at the present
time are owing local merchants for
the necessaries of life purchased
months -ago. But rich or" poor they
came and went, and pungled up the
cash for goods they had not Inspect
ed or knew absolutely nothing about.
What did they care so long asthey
were being humbugged by some one?
Perhaps when they reached home the
groceries were as represented and
perhaps they were not What if they
were not? Could they return them
to the local store and trade them
for goods that were pure and whole
some? No they could not. The only
thing for them to do Is to take what
they get, pay for It, and look pleasant
