Pays to Trade BRIEF SKETCH OF WAN ISLANDS The Hawaiian group, 200 miles southwest of San Francisco and 3400 miles southeast of Yokohoma, consists of 20 Islands, Including the coral Islets, all of the main group being of vol canic origin. Honolulu Is the port of Oahu; Hilo of Hawaii and Kahulul, of the island of Maul. The entire group, In all probability, constitutes the remains of a great area of volcan ic action, which includes Japan, the Philippines, Polynesia and the north ern extremity of the Pacific slope. The climate of Hawaii Is subtropi cal, but salubrious to a high degree. Swept by trade winds and washed .by cool oceanic current flowing south ward, we have a remarkable uni formity of temperature which aver ages 76 degrees, the difference be tween winter and summer being only 10 degrees. The Hawaiian language has no word for "weather" or "Indi gestion." The food supply Is rather meager as 1o variety, neither corn nor the cere als being Indigenous to the soil. The sweet potato flourishes with 60 va rieties, and the banana Is abundant, Including some 20 varieties. In addi tion to this we find the breadfruit, the cocoanut, the yam and the taro. Both sugar cane and arrow root are Indigenous, but singularly enough the natives are Ignorant of their use and value. The richness of the sol) and the kindliness of the climate off set any lack of variety In foodstuffs. It is said that 27 breadfruit trees, which would nearly cover an English acre with their shade, are sufficient to support 10 or It people during eight months of the year. The taro Is the staff of life for the Hawaiian Islanders. Its tuberous root Is baled, pulverized under a stone pes tle, made Into a thick paste and fer mented, when It is called "pol." This pol Is universally eaten and in large quantities. Its economic Im portance may be realised from the fact that a strip of land four feet wide and It feet long, which la scarcely larger than a good sized dining room table, can afford sustenance, when property cultivated, to a tingle per son for a year, at "which rate a square mile would sustain over 15,000 people for the same period. This dish, which Is so much relish ed by the Hawallans, tastes like sour paste made of flour. It Is exceed ingly digestible, however, and has fat tening qualities beyond most any other diet. Captain Cook, upon his voyage of, discovery, found no larger domestic animals than pigs and dogs. The dog was considered a great delicacy and not to be wasted on common people. Mr. Kills, one of the early mission aries, records the fact that the natives In his day, 1825, regarded the flesh of the dog as sweeter than that of the pig. He saw nearly 200 dogs cooked at one time, and reported a certain royal feast where twice that number were baked and devoured. There are no snakes on the Inlands or noxious Insects. The flea and mos quito have been Imported. For the latter there is no name In the native language. It will readily be seen that there must be few fish In the waters of volcanic Islands, but those found In the sea are beautifully colored and of great variety. Che shark abounds and in earlier years was considered sacred, sacrifices being offered to him, and lnclosures were made along the sea shore In which the shark was maintained, fed and worshipped. The Islands were discovered by Cap tain Cook In 1778. He was murdered the following year upon his return because of Indignities visited upon the people by himself and his men. He and other explorers, among whom were Vancouver and Brough ton, whoBe names are familiar In con nection with British Columbia and the magnificent harbor on the east coast of Corea, found the natives ro bust, tall, many of them measuring five feet nine Inches, with regular features, expansive forehead, teeth that were large and white, and coun tenances that were mild and friendly, with kindly eyes. The women were Inclined to be stout, more than one queen weighing over 200 pounds. The power to re sist disease among them was small. Diseases, conveyed r.y sailors, swept through the Islands and more than once threatened to exterminate the Islander. PASSING OF AN HISTORIC INN. Famous Star and Garter Nearly 200 Years Old. London, June 21. The tar and Garter hotel, one of the most hlntnplr. and celebrated houses In England, is to be sold at public auction early in August. The hostelry, which crowns the summit of Richmond Hill, and commands a world-famous view, has been the scene of many notable gath ering. An Inn was first established on the site in 1738. A fire destroyed the older portions of the hotel some 35 or 40 years ago. The banqueting houc of the existing building was erertcd In 1864. The old Star and Garter was fa mous, among other things, for Its theatrical associations. . Garrlck made the Inn a rendezvous for his company and many noted stars, among them Edmund Kenn, Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Slddons, made It the regular place to spend their summer holidays. They wrote smart thlnca In lta vlsltlnw Vinntr and held many merry parties there. me visiting book, like so many other relics of historic interest, Is now In the possession of an American col lector. That truth Is stranger than fiction iuia once more been demonstrated In the little town of Fedora, Tenn., the residence of C. V. Pepper. He writes. "I was In bed, entirely disabled with hemorrhages of the lungs and throat Doctors failed to help me, and all hope had fled when I began taking Dr. King's New Discovery. Then In stant relief came. The coughing soon ceased; the bleeding diminished rap Idly, and in three weeks I waa able to go to work." Guaranteed for coughs and colds. 60o and $1.00 at Tallman ft Co.'s. drug store. Interstate ConinilsHton Confronted by nil Altogether Novel Proposition ltullroniU of America, and the Hamburg-American Puokct Compa ny Snhl to Ho In League WlJili Die tales Hates and ninekiiiitll by a Clow Combine. A Washington dispatch says the Interstate commerce commission de cided to Institute a proceeding of in quiry and investigation into the affairs of the Hamburg-American Packet company, which Is charged by Peter Wright & Sons, general agents at Philadelphia of the Cosmopolitan lines, with pooling and maintaining monopolies in restrain of trade. The inquiry Is expected to be one of the most stupendous ever undertaken and of a character different from any that ever before has engaged the attention of the commission. The Inquiry will have to deal with an alleged combination between rail roads in the United States and the German shipping concerns, and there fore Interests every American pro ducer, manufacturer or shipper aspir ing to Introduce hlB goods to foreign consumers. Monopoly of Enstbonnd Traffic. According to the complaint on which action was taken by the commission the Hamburg-American Packet com pany has built up a complete monop oly of the eastbound traffic originating In Chicago, St. Louis. Kansas City, Omah, Minneapolis, Duluth, Cleveland and other manufacturing centers of the United States, Intended for the In terior ports or places on the continent of Europe. The complaint reviews what It claims to be unfair methods In stifling competition. The Cosmopolitan Shipping compa ny of Philadelphia, which figures as the complainant, operates lines to Rotterdam. Leith and Copenhagen. The charges allege that an Ironclad trust In transatlantic freight carrying exists between the Hamburg-American Packet company, the North German Lloyd.- Scandinavian-American line and the Wilson (Hull) line and that this pool apportions the volume of traffic each of its members shall carry and from what port or ports each line shall make Its sailings, thus Involving the apportionment of trafflo originat ing In western cities both as to char acter and amount, between the cities of the north Atlantic seaboard. The charges are summed up as fol lows; 1. That the Hamburg-American Packet company Is a monopoly In re straint of trade, exercising through Its contracts the power to control traffic, both east and westbound, between Hamburg and interior cities In the United States, and to determine rates and routes of such traffic. 2. That the Raltlc pool, of which the Hamburg-American Packet com pany Is the controlling factor, Is a combine In restraint of trade, dictat ing the percentages of traffic, dlctat Interlor cities of the United States to Baltic ports, which shall flow through each of the north Atlantic ports men tioned, to the end that each of the lines composing the pool may receive Its allotted proportion of the business and no more. Four other charges are made as fol lows: Effect of Differentials! Nullified. That the effect of differentials which place American ports on , an equality Is nullified by the pool's ar bitrary division of traffic; that the acts complained of are' In violation of the'lawn 'of the United States; that efforts td ''rehabilitate the American merchant' marine are hampered and rendered abortive by this monopoly, and, finally, that there Is little use In efforts for the benefit of American shipping If at the same. time we allow our present lnws to be violated by an unscrupulous foreign corporation In Its efforts to suppress American com petition on land and sea. lie Find tbe Stick. "I have fired the walking stick I've carried over 40 years, on account of a sore that resisted every kind of treatment, until I tried Bucklen's Arnica Salve; that has healed the sore and made me a happy man," writes John Garrett, of North Mills, N.
