According to infor mation received by the writer, in 1893, 14 years ago, some one brought to Oregon, to the headwaters of the Willamette, a lot of English birds, among them being the skylark, thrush, nuthatch and robin. They . were turned loose, as the climate was considered very similar to that of southern England. A few of the birds prospered, and there are many of them in the state now, but some were never heard from. It Is more than probable that this nuthatch could be trac&d to that collection of birds. . . WATER ON AGENCY PLAIN'S. Rejoicing In Northern Purt of Crook County. There Is rejoicing in the Madras country today. WUer has been struck in the well being drilled on the Agency plain on the ranch of, W. F. Maglll, 10 miles north of this place, the flow being tapped at a depth of 420 feet and the water rising 60 feet In the drill hole, says a correspondent from Mad ras, Crook county. The drillers state that the first water brought out of the well was warm. Several express the opinion that an artesian flow will be developed when the well is cased. The water was encountered. In a layer composed of soft soapstone and clay and drilling Is being continued In order, if possible, to get a hard bot tom for the well. All on the Water Wagon. Persons who have not experienced the hardships of a waterless country can scarcely realize what It means. It means that unless once or twice each week the farmer hitches four horses to his water tank and drives from three to 12 miles for water, he finds himself wltout this Indispensable ele ment no water to drink, no water for his household needs, no water for his chickens, hogs, cows or work horses. With fertile lands and delightful cli mate, and now, promise of the pass ing of the serious handicap of lack of water for household and ranch pur poses, the spirit of rejoicing is strong upon every resident of the district and this baptism of water, although ub terranean, has washed away many of the sins of this country, in, the Judg ment of the People who love It and are developing It. Store PENDLETON, OREGONQ I HOUSEKEEPERS WILL PUMP AT LA GRANDE. O. R. & N. Abandon Hope of Artesian Water. Division Engineer BollOns, of the O. A. A N., has ordered a let-up in In creasing the depth of the artesian well in the O. R. & N. yards in this city, says the Observer of La Grande, and yesterday the diggers, Messrs. Miller & West, returned to Portland for final instructions.. The officials of the O. R. & N. are satisfied with the well as It now Is,, and the flow of more than 100 gallons per minute Is sufficient to meet their demands. During the attempt to in crease the flow the officials were not so much desirous of having more water as they were to have pressure enough to raise the water to a tank without the aid of pumps. They have decided, however, that they will re sort to the pump method. Conse quently a pump will be Installed In the well and the flow forced by me chanical apparattis to a water tank for distribution to engines and round house needs. One reason for not going deeper Is that officials feared another stream of Impure water would be tapped and thus ruin the practicability of the well. The casing now reaches a depth of 875 feet. In Huntington Next. The diggers are In Portland receiv ing definite Instructions relative to the well which they will dig for the O. R. A N. in the Huntington yards. There is already a flowing well nl the vicinity of that city, and the pos sibility of finding another one there is promising. The end of this week will see the diggers at work at the O. R. & N. terminal.
