A fatal accident occurred In the Rear river Wednesday. " A United States surveyor, whose name could nut be ascertained, went on an ex pedition to measure the flow of the water of Hear river, on the Puttie Creek bridge, about four and a half miles above Preston. They got Into a boat which they had previously used, and started into the stream. As they neared the middle of the river the boat commenced to leak very bad ly. Seeing the danger in which they were placed, they endeavored to turn trV boat around and get back to shore. By this time the boat was nearly ore-fourth full of water. N.-Mjii told the surveyor that ho could not swim, and the government ofrwiai, with heroic fortitude. Jump ed out in order to lighten the boat, and commenced to swim to the shore. He shouted lack to Nelson to row as hard os he could for the shore. Re lieved of the welKht of the surveyor, tlie boat continued shoreward for a while, l.ut the water came in so fast that the occupant could not control It nnd In a very short spnee of time the ';ont and the man sank out of slylit. The whole of Sunday after nron was taken up with peoplo drag ging for the tody and nt an early hour M'ind:iy morning the body was still U n recovered. Owing to the superabundance of the mustard weed along the line of the Eureka Flat branch the train from Pleasant View was eight hours late last night, arriving here at 12:15 a. m., instead of 3:13 p. - m., the scheduled time. This 1b what Is known as Jhe weedy sAson along the 60-mlle stretch of road between Walla, Walla nnd Pleasant View. Usually a train, runs out there and back every Sun day, carrying meter In large tanks to tho farmers along the road and bringing back tho cars full of wheat. Yesterday, 'however, the rails were so overgrown with weeds that pro gress was rendered nearly impossible at times. The rnlls were so thickly covered that often when the wheels of the engine were revolving at a rate which should enrry the train 40 miles an hour It would be standing still because the weeds, when crushed by the engine greased the rails. By tho liberal use of sand the train was coaxed along to Eureka Juno tlon. There the strain proved too much, and the engine slipped its back eccentric. This rendered it helpless, and It wns necessary for the disabled train to lay there until an engine could be sent from Walla Walla. . Chief Ford Killed a Man M Mullan. It ap pears that Johnson, who had been drinking heavily for Borne time, be came jealous of one 'of the girls In the dance hall whom he thought had Jilted him. He went to the dance hall and pulled a weapon on" the girls there and threatened to shoot Law rence and the bartender. Lawrence warned Johnson that he would have him arrested if he did not get out and Johnson then said he wculd blow the head off any pcllceman who tried to touch him. Just about a minute af ter this Barney Ford walked into the dance hall at one doer and Johnson walked out at the other. Lawrence told Ford what had taken place and Ford went out to arrest Johnson. As Ford approached Johnson drew a gun and presented it at Ford's head. Ford did not stmd on ceremony, but shot and killed him Instantly.
