L .Williamson and Mrs. Wm, Talbert returned Friday from La Grande, where they went as delegates to the big Rebekah convention. The honor of receiving the chivalry degree was conferred upon Mrs. Talbert at the convention. Miss Jennie Dykes has returned from Spokane, where she has been visiting friends. Miss Bessie McDanlel Is here from Milton visiting friends. Consolidate Schools. Petitions are being circulated up the river for the consolldat'on of four schools the North Fork, South Fork. Bowlus and DeHaven schools. It Is asked that one big building be erected for these districts near where the L'nlon church stands, and It Is cited that the one school will do for all the districts. There are some remon strators who oppose It, saying that several of the families I've too far for such a school. It Is understood that the question will be voted, upon In a very short time. Editor Swenson. of the .Milton Eagle, returned yesterday from a short visit to Athena, and he reported a very pleasant trip. The public schools of this place have closed after a very successful term. E. church, will give n lawn social at the home of Mrs. E. W. Phelps this even ing. Linn Case Compromised. The case in equity of G. M. McK'n- zie against Anna Zlnk has been com promised. This case was brought by plaintiff for the purpose of having de fendant place a boundary line between their lands. The plaintiff was repre sented by B. D. Peterson and the de fendant by S. E. Kane of Walla Walla. Freewater, May 2S. A meeting of the board of directors of the Freewater Canning & Preserving company Is be ing held this afternoon for the pur pose of discussing subjects In connec tion with the opening of the cannery. Two carloads of machinery have been received which Is now being Installed by experts who are now here for that purpose. Things are being arranged to can a large amount of fruits and vegetables this season. Prospects are bright for a good opening year for the new establishment. The Touchet ball team played ball here Sunday afternoon, when the Touchet team won the game by a score of' 14 to 4. Strawberries are being shipped out dally, nearly two carloads having gone out nearly every day for a week, While the crop Is short, only a half crop being received In many Instances, the berries are bringing a very good price, which will help the growers out, It Is understood that the dealers are paying the growers from $3. B0 to $4.60 and upwards a crate, at this time. A number of buyers have been here during the past few days for different larsre firms, among them being t. E, Umbach, with H. J. Shlnn & Co. wholesale commission and fruit deal ers of Spokane. These buyers are pur chasing all the berries that it is pos slble for them to get. Prospects are excellent for all lnte berries and some cherries are already being brought in, but not enough t ship. It Is now feared that berry pickers will be-short, as many of those employed will go Into the alfalfa fields to cut hay. Property Sales. R. F. Vancll has sold to Mr. Haney of Pine Valley, the 25-foot north end of lots 13, 14, 15 and 16, for a consid eration of $1000. A little over a year ago Mr. Vancll bought this land for $380. which goes to show that the m- terurban line and other Improvements made have been of great benefit to this country. . To Bund Warehouse. The Blalock Fruit company, Walla Walla, has purchased lots 5, 6, 7 and 8 In block 64, from Wm. John son, for tne purpose or Dunning u branch fruit house at this place. The Blalock people are already shipping out large quantities of fruit from this section. The merchants are doing a good business. This is especially true in the hardware and grocery business. New Kind of Berry. J. M. Clark, a well known fruit rancher living one mile below Free water, Is a grower of a new variety of strawberry, known as the Gibson berry, or the Oregon berry- They are very large and of excellent flavor. The trolley lines are continually crowded, and the towns of Freewater and Milton' were crowded with Walla Walla visitors Sunday. Alfalfa and wheat are looking fine In all directions, and It Is reported that alfalfa will be cut In many places dur ing the week. Blake Hutchinson has arrived frorn Manitoba, Canada, to visit with his sister, Mrs. Harry Badgero, for a short time.
