The road a ribbon of white un- furled. That winds away to the dlB- tant world: A leave of care and a song to sing, A staff and crust In my wander- lng. No clanging bells, no traffic's din, Nor city gates to hold me In. I hear It calling, soft and low. And I must answer I must go. land. One pair of hands are now as productive as one hundred pairs a few years, ago. One mind can direct work which required many minds not long ago. Hands, brain, enlightened con science, developed skill, higher Ideals all are combining to bring out the greatest and most marvelous results. Under this Intense development, this dynamic progress, this superb mental and physical growth, Is It not possible that within a tew years, the needs of the world may be supplied In a six, or even a four-hour working day? Carrying the thought further, If the four or six-hour day Is possible, Is it not necessary that the Intellectual standards of men be raised, that their Idle time be employed well? As the work day Is shortened, standards must be raised. As efficiency Increases citizenship, manhood, morals all must feel the upward and enlightened tendency. THE INSATIATE PUBLIC. The road It waits, and I hear 4 the song Of a rover sung In a city's throng. I'll barter al I have earned In strife For a crust and staff, and a ro- ver's life. I'll heed no voice that calls me back. For my heart Is true to the rover's track. The road Is calling, calling low, And I must answer I must go! Will F. Griffin In Milwaukee Sentinel. XEW ERA FOR PENDLETON. When the fires were kindled under the gas retorts In this city this morn, tag, another new era opened for Pen. dleton. Gas adds another fuel resource to the homes and Institution of the city and It Is believed will be highly appreciated and largely patronized by Pendleton. ' In other cities It Is the leading fuel nd light. It can be made as cheap ly and successfully here as anywhere ,ln the west, where like conditions pre vail and there Is no reason why Pen. dleton should not fully enjoy this pro. duct of science. It Is clean, convenient, safe, brll llant as a light and has Intense heat sis a fuel and can be distributed over the city at a very reasonable cost and the East Oregonlan believes that the starting of the gas plant Is the be. ginning of a better era, as well as new era In the development of the city. It should encourage manufacturing to some extent. It should make , housekeeping more easy and pleasant during the summer months and It Is to be hoped that the fires kindled this morning burn continuously as long as Pendleton Is on the map. THE SIX-HOUR DAY. One of the most startling thought presented In the excellent graduating address by President Campbell of the University of Oregon, In the com. mencement exercises last night, was the suggestion that with highly de veloped. Industrial resources in this country, the average working day might be reduced to six hours or even less. With the application of Ingenious machinery men are able to produce- hundred fold, In the Industries of the The auestlon Is often asked: Why do newspapers publish sensational and suggestive news? Why do they en courage morbid development by giv ing harrowing and repulsive details? Simply because the public demands The newspapers which give 'the fullest .details, the most startling and realistic news, enjoy the greatest pat ronage. The public sets the pace. It might be asked: Why do manufactur ers make such high priced automo biles? Why Is such speed developed on railroad systems? Why are so many fads and seeming follies en couraged In fashion T Simply because the Insatiate public demands It. Simply because the pub lic must be appeared. Newspaper men abhor the details they are often called upon to publish. They despise the lower levels to which they are forced. They resent the de mand for the morbid and suggestive. They deplore the necessity of feeding the depraved appetites of the sensa tion-hunters of the public. Newspaper men do not deplore these tendencies because they are bet. ter or brighter than the public which they supply with news. They are made of the same common clay, feel the same Impulses, respond to the same admonitions. But being In the whirlpool, In the maelstrom of the sensational and knowing Its false and unstable foun. dntlons, realizing its certain downward He for SO years. Since the publication of Miss Tarbell's book on the subject they have been definitely known. It la not knowledge of the evils which the American people lack. It H not the will to Btop them, either; not of late. WHAT IS STILL. WANT ING IS A LEGAL REMEDY THAT WILL WALK. And, while the News greatly approves of the fining of Standard Oil, as In the recent Chicago cases, we have no Idea that such fines will even begin to solve the problem waiting solution. What Is wanted In this case Is, first, the nersonnl resDonslblllty of the heads of the corporation for Its crlnv lnal acts; and, second, a legal ma chinery that will enable-the penalty to be brought home without undue cost or loss of time. A corporation Is an artificial creat ure, called Into being by the state for a definite purpose, and the moment It steps outside that purpose It has no legal existence, and the personal re- sponslblllty of Its officers or owners must be enforced. If the commissioner of corporations can act upon this principle, If he can make Mr. Rockefeller and Mr. Flag ler and the rest pay for their sins In their own proper persons, why the News would be ready to wager that monopoly would lose Its charm at a rapid rate. MAN-A-UN lip The report of United States Steel corporation, recently made public, shows that the net earnings of this great monopoly reached the fabulous sum of J156.624.273 last year. And no one will waste the time In trying to figure where the steel trust "got it: From the humblest citizen who built a home or purchased so much as a pound of nails, to the great railroad companies for the construction of trackage all of them contributed to make the "melon" look so luscious to the shareholders of the steel trust COMINO EVENTS. The report of the commissioner of corporations on the Standard OH company Is an Interesting bit of read ing, says the Denver News.
