Is experimenting on a method of destroying- the abundant crop of dandelions now nearlng harvest time In the court house yard. From a news article In on of the Spokane papers Mr.' GUllland found an Item telling of experiments being nvde. there with a solution which they called the "Denver Dandelion Dope," and which Is proving effica cious. The mixture la used as a spray and Is sprinkled over the lawn and was tried yesterday. All of the obnoxious weeds were found to be dead this morning In a strip to which the spray was applied nnd if the roots die as readily as did the tops, there is no doubt but that it is a good thing. The spray is made by taking a bar rel of water, 51 gallons,, and adding tn that about 100 pounds of Iron sul-i phate and 10 pounds ef sulphuric acid. Roth of the Ingredients are very cheap and can easily be furnish' ed by o druggist. Care should be used to let the mix ture stand long enough to thorough ly dissolve the Iron sulphate.' As th sulphuric acid Is a poison It Is neces sury to handle It carefully. The grass to which the spray was applied was somewhat damaged as well as the weeds, but It is already coming out and It Is claimed that the weed destroyer will In no wise hurt the lawn grass. The chief feature of the program was the Inspiring address by Presi dent P. L. Campbell of the University of Oregon, who spoke for 30 minutes on the "Basis of Permanent Prosper ity." In this excellent address he showed the marvelous natural resour ces of the country which are being developed rapidly and urged higher educational standards to be In keep, lng with this material progress. The address was an intellectual treat and proved the president to be a close student of economic and social conditions. The diplomas were presented to the graduating class by Dr. C. J. Smith for the school board, whoes brief re- marks to the students were pertinent and impressive. The audience overflowed the church and was a handsome compliment to Pendleton's interest In and love for her public schools. SEVENTYFIVE TO ATHENA. A. C. RUBY. Pres W. L. THOMPSON, Cashier. T. G.
