Next Sunday afternoon The Dalles baseball team, known as the "Colum btas," will descend upon the local ag gregation of ball pushers via the Portland passenger and attempt to convince the "Boosters" ot this city that the proper place for them Is In the also-ran brigade and that they would make a far better showing at bucking sacks or chasing Jackrabblta, than they could ever hope to make at winning the bleachers or getting a hand from the grandstand in a ball game with The Dalles, as the men on the other bench. However, this is only what the boya from the sand hills are saying, and their opln'on In this matter will be doomed to a sudden change after the smoke has cleared away and they have regained their senses from the engage ment to be started on the Court street grounds Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. There have been no shifts n the local line-up this week, which will allow the boys to become ac quainted with their respective posi tions and give a better showing as to team work, which la practically all that "has held the "Boosters" back from bemg a' winning combination.- Kehm, who will be on the firing, line for the home boys,- In Sunday's game, has the famous spit-ball down to a fare-you-well, and can be ex pected to give a much better exhibi tion of passing up the klnky-klnks than he accomplished In last Sunday's game, which was his first appearance on the rubber this season, and In which old Pluvius butted In and broke up the proceedings. The Dalles team played the Powers Blues of Portland last Sunday and were defeated by the close score of 6 to E. Following may be found a clip ping from The Dalles paper showing how the "Columblas" showed up on the diamond: "Taliaferro seemed to Improve as the game progressed and the last ftw Innings he was burning up the atmos phere with speed. Every ball that shot over the home plate seemed to have a tall of smoke in Its wake while the visitors for the most part swung wildly but stirred up little except ozone. He also proved himself the candy kid with the big stick and It was his timely hitting that brought in all five runs. With the bases full In the fifth innlntr and two down, he smashed the horsehlde over the left field fence for two cushions, allow Ing-Maloney and McCoy to score. Again In the ninth with two men on bases he jammed a scorcher through second base, which Monson finally re. covered and threw wild to home, al lowing the Columblas to score three runs. Maloney made his first appear ance of the season and played a brll liant game at first. He nailed every thing that came his way, got a single and succeeded in getting soaked twice, The entire field played a sturdy game and while numerous errors were chalked ud against them, this was largely due to the fact that some of the chances were too hot to handle. McCoy played a star game and very little base stealing was accomplished by the Portlanders." Following are the line-ups of the two teams for Sunday: "Columblas" McCoy, c; C. The livestock Interests ar. very gteat there still, and the ad vancing price of cattle has made th outlook better than for several years. The John Day valley will one day be come a rival to Hood River as an apple region. There is an entire lack ot fruit pests which are becoming the bine of most fruit sections, and the quality of the fruit Is the best" He reports thnt the railroad is now at Austins, only IS miles from Prairie City, and the people expect the line to be extended to the val ley, and when such shall be the case there will be a certain Influx of peo pie. A branch of the railroad la be Ing surveyed down the middle fork of the John Day river to the Susan ville mining district, a region rich In gold and sure some day to become a vast mining center. "The northern part of Grant coun ty near Rltter, Long Creek and Ktl bride, presents opportunities for whontgrowers who are looking for cheap lands. Wheat is produced there as easily as In this section and when a railroad penetrates that sec tlon of country there will be high prices and a great demand. Today the men who are going to Alberta would do well to visit northern Gran county for land purchases," said Judge Lowell. si If I Wore PANTS Fd Buy Them at, Roosevelt's Boston Store That's All.
