St. Louis, Mny 20. L. T. Cooper,
the man who has created n sensation
throughout the east, and who Is rap
Idly acquiring a national reputation,
arrived In St. Louis yesterday.
Cooper Is president of the Cooper
Medicine company of Dayton, Ohio,
and has made a fortune within the
past few years estimated at several
millions, hy the sale of two prepara
tions, which are claimed to be very
unusual, and which, are said to ac
complish remarkable results.
Cooper spends his time traveling
from city to city Introducing these
remedies and In this manner he has
acquired the fortune he now possess
es. Cooper is said to be a very remark
able character and a man with ec
centric Idoas; one of his beliefs Is
that a certain part of his Income
should be devoted to charitable work,
and he Is snld to give thousands of
'dollars to the poor in each city that
he visits.
His charitable work is original, as
he Is continually devising new meth
ods of making money give the most
pleasure and relief possible.
The mcst remarkable feature of
Ceoper's work Is what Is known as
his "Three minute removal of deaf
ness." In cities visited by him with
in the past year he has appeared
nightly before large audiences and
offered to make any one hear within
less than three minutes. If . they
would come up on the stage. Re
ports from Pittsburg, Cincinnati, De
troit, Cleveland and Louisville, and
other cities, seem to Indicate that
Cooper actually did as he claimed.
Each night he Is said to have re
moved, before thousands of people,
eases of deafness in about three min
utes' time with one of his prepara
tions. The accounts of hla work ap
peared In all the leading daillea of
the east, and people have flocked
to him from all parts of the country.
The sale of his preparations la said
to reach enormous proportions with
in a week after Cooper arrives In a
city. Whether he will be as success
ful in St. Louis as elsewhere .remains
to be seen.

Echo, May 20. Two carloads of
cattle were shipped from this point
a tew days ago which were purchased
by the Union Meat company of Port
land from R. N. Stanfield, for which
15.75 per hundred was received, which
is considered the best price ever re
ceived for cattle in this section. They
were shipped from here to Troutdale.
Special Council Meeting.
A special session of the city coun
cil was held Saturday afternoon to dis
cuss the opening of Date street next
of the Hotel Echo, which was recent
ly fenced In by J. D. Nelson, who
claimed that he had a right to the
property In private ownership. It Is
claimed that the county records show
that It Is a street, and after some dis
cussion, the mayor ordered the fence
taken down. It is understood that
the matter will be fought out In the
courts.
Mayor L. A. Esteb states that at
a recent meeting of the council It was
found that the city was In debt to the
amount of $2, which Is considered a
very good showing.
Miss Delia King, one of the teachers
In the Echo public school, expects to
leave In about two weeks for her home
In Michigan, where she will spend her
summer vacation.' She has been re
engaged to teach next term, and will
return late In August.
E. H. Brown, editor of the Echo
Register, returned Friday from Hot
Lake, where he had been for several
days taking treatment for rheumatism.
He has a great deal of faith In Hot
Lake, and came back much Improved.
There are a number of cases of
German measles In and around Echo,
though they are In a light form.
Mrs. J. E. Taylor, who recently
underwent a slight operation In a
Walla Walla hospital, Is getting along
nicely and will be able to return home
soon.
C. R. Lyle recently tendered his res
Ignatton as councilman, which was ac
cepted, and Louts Scholl, Jr., has been
appointed to fill the vacancy.
Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Smith will oc
cupy the Mudge residence. Mr. Smith
is connected with the Smith Hardware
company.
The Hinkle Ditch company Is mak
Ing some extensive repairs, and It Is
understood that considerable land Is
now being sold by the company.
Thousands of additional acres will be
Irrigated by the Hinkle . and Allen
Ditch companies, both of which have
men and teams at work now making
extensive Improvements.
F. T. George, of the George Miller
store, spent several days recently with
friends In Gilliam county. While
thre he was confined to his rom two
days with tonsllltls. i
Attorney R. R. Johnson has return'
ed to Echo after spending a few days
at the county seat on legal business.
Sheepsheaiing Is completed In the
Echo country, and thousands of
pounds of fine wool Is now stored In
the Echo warehouses, which It Is
thought will mostly be sold out on
sales day, which will be during the
next week.
Zoe Houser Is again In Echo after
spending some time at his mine In
Grant county.
Mrs. Toung will leave today for La
Grande, where she will represent the
Rebekah lodge In the big state con
ventlon at that place.
A large amount of gravel Is still be
lng taken from the Umatilla river by
the Puget 8ound Bridge ft Dredging
company, which Is being used in
cement work on the government ditch.
Everything is moving along nicely on
the ditch In this vicinity.
The crops In the Echo country never
looked better at this season of the
year. The late rains have done much
good to growing grain, fruits and al
falfa. Thls'ls expected to be a banner
year for alfalfa.
Government's Sanltarinm Opened,
Hot Springs, S. D., May 20. The
new Battle Mountain sanitarium,
which is to be formally opened this
week, Is the finest institution of Its
kind In the country. It was built by
the United States government at a cost
of $1,000,000. It Is designed especial
ly for the treatment of patients af
flicted with tuberculosis and kindred
diseases. The building and equip
ment are of the most modern charac
ter. The buildings are surrounded by
a park containing 5000 acres.
Hearing of Eddy Trustees.
Concord, N. H., May 20. An emi
nent array of legal counsel was on
hand today to take part In the first
Important court hearing In the fa
mous Eddy case. The hearing Is on
the motion to Substitute the trustees
under the deed of trust executed by
Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy, on March
, transferring her property to Archi
bald McLallan, Joslah E. Fernald and
Henry M. Baker for the plaintiffs or
"next friends" named In the original
bill, Eddy vs. Frye.
Anniversary Cuban Independence.
' Havana, May 20. The fifth anni
versary of the Independence of Cuba
and of the Inauguration of Tomas Es
trada Palma as first president of the
republic, was celebrated today. The
day was observed as a public holiday
and the public buildings and business
houses of Havana generally displayed
the flags of Cuba and the United
8tates. A public reception was held
this afternoon at the governor's pal
ace. , f

H. Raley, of Pendleton, will be the
speaker of the day. It promises to be
one of the best events of the kind
ever given here.
Rev. "W. S. Holt, D. D., of Portland,
assisted Rev. Robert O. Dlven during
the services here yesterday.
A social will be given by the C. M.
A., May 25, which promises to be an
enjoyable affair. -
Alta lodge No. KB, I. O. O. F has
decided, to hold decoration services,
May 30, Decoration Day, when an ap
propriate program will be carried out.
The crops about Pilot Rock are
looking fine, and the rains at this
time will be of much benefit.
Work on the Pilot Rock branch of
the O. R. N. Is going on at a rapid
rate, and It will not be long until cars
will be seen coming over the line.
A number of Pilot Rock people have
been county seat visitors during the
past week.

thousand head of the sheep were
purchased from the Penland Lnnd
Livestock company, J. L. Howard
brought In 800 and D. O. Justus drove

be started again next Friday on
sheep which will be shipped hy Ttea
Hros.
Dipping was commenced here last
Sunday when 4500 sheep were put
through the company vat. Five thou
sand of the sheep were from the Pen
land Lnnd Llxestock ranch and
had boen sold to Mr. Oxman for
shipment this spring. Other ship
ments will follow until upwards of
100,000 sheep, which were contract
ed for last December, have gone out.

Odd River Derelicts.
A few days ago Jack Hays, who
works at the Regulator dock, saw a
queer looking log floating down the
river and as he was about to let It
pass discovered that it was out of
the ordinary and pulled It In. It
proved to be a genuine Indian canoe
thirty feet long and mado out of a
large tree. It is a curiosity and Jack
has moored it at the dock where all
may examine It. ' .
A submerged scow was towed up
the river Thursday and is tied below
the railroad bridge. It was run
ning down the river and being too
heavily iaden .sank one night. The
old gentleman who lived on It was
compelled to crawl out and escape
the best way he could. The Dalles

shot at some men who were caught
robbing an O. R. A N. car, and who;
fled. One of the marshal's bullets-
went wild and' struck Frank Savits,
aged 14 years, passing through his
body from side to side, lust above the

er.
