Quackenbush, field superin tendent of district No. 1, for the Beet Sugar company, states that there are approximately 1000 acres of growing beets in the vicinity of Ontario, on the OtcRon side. This acreage Is double that of 1906. Judging by lost year's production and the present status of this yeur's crop, Mr. Quack enbush estimates the yield of the latter will be IB or 16 tons per acre. By May 30 a much closer estimate can be made, however. The help this .season, he says, is good and the prospect seems very fuvorable. The next 20 days will be the most critical time, for within that period the thinning and blocking out must be done and much depends up on the efficiency with which thnt work Is done. Over one-half of the beets of the district have been culti vated twice and 300 acres have been blocked and thinned. The practice Is to cultivate the teets four or five times. In this work they use a two horse riding cultivator that takes four rows at a time, making It an easy matter to cover 12 to n acres per day with one team. Practically all beet seed I Import ed from Germany. As the planting this season was early and the crop now well advanced, It will be possible to start the factory earlier to a cor responding degree.
