Closed Sunday In Lewlrton.
Every saloon in Lewlston "went
dark" at 12 o'clock last night when
the state Sunday closing law became
operative. There has been some talk
to the effect that the provisions of
the law relative to the closing of sa
loons might not be observed, but
none of the saloon proprietors took
this position. In speaking of the
closing of the saloons, one of the
proprietors stated that the bottle
trade during the evening had been
exceedingly large and that he pre
sumed other establishments witness
ed a similnr condition, this fact. In
dicating that the Inclined will not be
entirely without liquor today. The
experience of a closed Sunday in
Lewlston will be a . novelty as the
town has been opened In that regard
since it was established nearly a half
century ago.
But the law docs not stop at sa
loons, pid outride of cigar stores,
lemonade stands, dru stores and
livery sttihlca no establishment can
transact business. Fuithermore no
person can work at his trade, what
ever It may be, except "works of ne
cessity, mercy or charity." nor shall
n person 'employ another person to
engage In any trade, calling or avo
cation for him. Baseball cannot be
played on Sunday and pleasure ex
cursions cannot be run on railroad
or steamboat lines. The clear ob
ject ol the law Is to have all L1ahq
people rest on Sunday, and If some
fellow does not desire to rest make
htm do so. The law, It seems, after
a careful reading of the same dis
criminates In favor of the postofflce
business, and allows that' establish
ment to run wide open. Lewlston

Runaway Cars Granger llle Branch.
A. J. Green Is In the city from
Culdesao and gives the following ac
count of the wreck on the N. P. ex
tension to Grangeville:
On Friday evening three cars
loaded With bridge timbers broke
loose about five miles up the canyon
on the extension of the Northern
Pacific to Grangeville, and dashed
down the grade. The cars gathered
a fearful momentum and after run
ning about three miles two of the
cars left the track and wore dlt.-hed.

That no lives were lost In this acci

Topprnlsh Indian Held for Murder.
Joe Flanney, the Mexican half
breed, who yesterday afternoon shot
and almost Instantly killed his wife
Hanna, at Toppenlsh, and then at
tempted suicide, today confessed his
guilt and told the reason for his
crime. Flanney, after killing the
woman, fired a bullet Into his . own
breat, but the wound, although Be
rlins, Is not likely to prove fatal.
Coroner Frank held an Inquest on
the murdered woman this morning
and after hearing the testimony of
Flanney, Andrew Riddle and others,
the Jury returned a verdict of mur
der against Flanney. The wounded
man was placed under arrest and
will be brought to North Yakima to
night on the North Coast Limited by
Dr. Frank and given Into the custody
of Sheriff Edwards. North Yakima.

The elttsens of Huntington should
feel proud of the man recently ap
pointed to fill the responsible posi
tion of city marshal. Although the
town Is full of hard characters and
women can hardly walk the streets
without being Insulted, the marshal
Is doing nothing to keep the touch
element moving along, but Is himself
disturbing the peace In an adjoining

Indians Afraid of llavdcn Lake.
As a further evidence that the
shores of Hayden lake were once the
home of the Indian, a petrified nu
merous, the n.aln bone of the arm
between the elbow and shoulder, was
unearthed yesterday, at the site of
the summer resort.
A short time ago the workmen dis
covered a remarkably well preserved
skull on the shore of the lake while
cleaning away the drift wood. Ex
aminations proved this to be the
skull of an Indian, probably having
lain there for many years. It Is
thought that the bone unearthed yes
terday Is a portion of the same skele
ton.
An old tradition or Indian legend
tells of how the Indians left Hayden
lake, being warned by the Great
Spirit; hut many of the old settlers
have stated that they never knew of
an Indian visiting the lake. Some
say that all the money In Idaho
would not get one of the natives to
attempt to cross that body of water.
