map of Idahc Lake Walcott, and al
though an artificial body of water, It
Is the largest lake In southern Ida
ho. ' Its area is three times greater
than that of big Payette lake In the
western part of the state, and Is
three-fourths the size of Jackson lake
In Wyoming.
Lake Walcott Is created by the
back water above the great Mini
doka dam recently constructed by the
reclamation service It covers about
15,000 acres. Is 3K mile long and for
more than seven mile It ha a width
of about two miles.
Near the headgate and dam plan
are being made for tree planting and
otherwise beautifying the ihorea
Lands bordering the lake will later
be water by means of pumps, thus
Increasing the attractions pf the lake.
The fish commission will be asked
to stock the lake with fish Already
ducks and geete In large numbers
are making It their summer head
1 quarters. The country about the
lake, until the advent of the recla
mation service about three years ago
was an uninhabited desert Today a
population of 10.000 Is living there.
Three thriving towns have sprung up
and s new railroad has been con
structed. The Minidoka project promises to
become one of the most thickly set
tled agricultural districts in the state,
and Lake Walcott will doubtless In
time bo a popular summer resort for
people living In that part of Idaho.

Floater Identified.
It was learned for a 'Certainty this
evening that the bedy taken from the
Snake river near Starbuck, Wash.,
several day ago, and burled day be
fore yesterday, owing to the decom
posed condition, was that of Phillip
Hammond, an Oregon Railroad ft
Navigation company surveyor,
drowned here about six week ago
while attempting to cross the Clear
water river In a skiff. The body was
Identified by one boot, the other hav
Ing come off through the decompos
ed condition, a woolen undershirt and
the teeth. The body had no trousers
on, they having probably been torn
off. The remains will probably be
exhumed and either brought her
tor burial or shipped to Minneapolis,

the Artisans, and at a recent meeting
the peculiar disappearance of Bev.
Street discussed to the satisfaction
of the lodge, which decided to pay
the widow In full. Mrs. Street has
a valuable property on the Matoles,
hut without her husband to develop
Its resources she must depend en
tirely upon hired help. The Bankers'

quiries as to the standing of Mr.

Ed W. Jones, a workman at the
gravel pit of the Three Tree Point
Clravel company, located at Three
Tree Point, fell a distance of (tR feet
yesterday morning and wns almost
Instantly killed.. Jones was working
on a trestle at the time. It wns his
duty to keep the flume leading from
the gravel pit to the bunker from
overflowing. He was engaged at bl
work when hi foot dipped and he
fell tn the ground belew.
His wife, standing within sight of
the place, saw him fall. With shriek
ahe ran to him. The foreman of the
pit was attracted by her scream and
hurried out to ascertain th cause

this week. Two crews of 11 and II
men respectively have started to work
and by May lb they expect to finish
hearing flocks aggregating 38,000
sheep. One of the crews has Just
finished shearing 38,000 sheep In the
Badger Prcket country, the work be
ing performed In fast time. Another
flock nf 8000 sheep will be sheared
after May 16. This flock Is pastured
In Johnson canyon and Is owned by
Wilson ft McLennan.

The supreme court has handed
down an opinion affirming the deci
sion of the lower court, and sustain
ing the contention of the utate gun
warden who had been sued for dam
ages because he liberated 750,000
fish captured from Snake river and
kept In ponds near by. The suit was
entitled J. Sherwood, appellant, vs.
W. N. Stephens, respondent The
court held that wild fish and game
being public and that a man could
not acquire title to same as he would
to chattels. It further held that a
man had no right to build a dam on
public stream and endeavor there
by to secure title to the fish therein.

ley are getting but 10 cent per head
for shearing sheep. The report yes
terday that the men had (truck for
14 1-3 cents, and were threatening to
leave the country unless they receiv

according to Stanley Coffin. Sheep
shearers have received an advance of
1 1-2 cents In the past week. They
were formerly paid 8 1-2 cents per
head, but this price has been ad
