That the Oregon Railroad Com

ness early Is shown by the fact that
It is studying practical methods from
tho Washington commission. A dis
patch from Olympla says of the Joint
meeting of the Oregon, Montana and
Washington commissions:

the new railway commissions of Mon
tana and Oregon spent a busy day
here today studying, with J. C.
Lawrence and Jesse T. Jones, Wash
ington railroad commissioners, the
methods adopted by this state's
board. Chnlrman J. C. Falrchlld of
the Washington commission, who
has been at Pelllngham, returned late
this afternoon. Tonight the visiting
officials and a number of newspaper
correspondents were guests of the,
Washington commission at dinner.
The commission discussed the dif
ferent powers and authority and in
detail went into the matter of rail
road reports. So far us the several
laws will permit similar blanks will
te used In the three states. By using
the same system a much better check
will be had on the roads.
Commission System Explained.
Tl.e Importance of this fact Is
recognized by those we have had
occasion to see how railroad-made
figures are used to give different re
sults fjr different conditions. The
whole office system methods of han
dling and filing correspondence, of,
keeping records and invoices were
carefully explained to the visitors
by the local commissioners.
Nearly the whole afternoon was
taken up In the engineer's office,
where H. P. Gillette, expert engineer
of the commission, explained In de
tail the work he and his force of
c.iRlneors and light of way men have
been doing for months past In mak
ing up data of the actual cost of the
various roads. Mr. Gillette explain
ed the figures he secured from the
railroads' own vouchers and records
at headquarters and how these vouch
ers and expenditures have been
cherkedw.
He told of the careful Inspection
bv trackmen of all railroad property
In this state, of the appraisements
made, not only to give values of rail
road property, hut to show the val
ues of adjoining property privately
owned.
The whole explanation was listen
ed to most attentively, the visitors
not leaving the office until two hours
after the usual closing time. Un
doubtedly th visit will be of u great
deal of assistance tc the new com
missioners and will be of great bene
fit to the Washington commission
nni people of this state if harmonious
action In tho three states results.
One important result of the con
ference will probably be uniformity

asked to make.
