Marx GOOD clothes and a good horse are alike in one way; the thoroughbred quality is something more than a surface appearance; it's what's underneath that wins the races. That's what we like about Hart, Schaffner & Marx clothes; the sound, reliable all-wool quality is in them; the tailoring is right; the "lines" of the garment are thoroughbred lines. The assertion made by Senator La Follette while fighting In congress for the passage of the railway rate bill, that the railroads of the United States are heavily over-capitalized, Is proved to bo absolutely true by government statistics compiled this spring. Forty per cent of the railroads of the United States earned gross $61, 347,147 In February, 1907; in Febru ary, 1906, they earned 160,613,077. This was an Increase of about $1,200,. 000 on this 40 per cent of the nation's mileage; for the 100 per cent the total would be about 1163,600,000 this Feb ruary. The Increase on the 100 per cent mileage would be about $3,000, 000. Last June a rate law was enacted, which was fought by the railroad lob by throughout the entire long session of the 69th congress. It was said at the time that It would not Injure the railways; "that It would not yield any. results in decreasing freight and pas senger tolls on the public. It was pointed out that, by the de feat of the Ln Follette amendments, the total result of the new rote law would be to prevent discrimination by roads in favor of one shipper against another shipper; that, Inas much as there was no provision for the establishment of a true basis for rate-making, there could be no ma terial correction of railroad tolls which were conceded to be extortionate by everyone not connected with the roads themselves. Senator La Follette proved by expert figures and by the most masterful an alysis ever presented In or out of the United States senate, that American raitrouds are over-capitalized; that they are collecting annually from $350,000,000 to $500,000,000 more than they could collect, were honest capi talization Insisted on. "Pneiiiiicnla's IKwidly Work had so seriously affected my right !ung," writes Mrs. Fannie Connor of Rural Route 1, Georgetown, Tenn., "that f coughed continuously night and day and the neighbors' predic tion consumption seemed Inevit able, until my husband brought home a bottle of Dr. King's New Dis covery, which In my case proved to be the only real cough cure and re storer of weak sore lungs."
