Potter, Robert Bibmegen and C. Som- mervllle. The Judges are Mrs. G. W. Proebstel, sr., B. B. Hall and Clark Wood. A musical program will be given also. Miss Pauline Simpson of Portland, who has been visiting her parents here for some time, has returned to her home. Mr. Swenson, of the Milton Eagle, was In Weston Saturday in attendance to the teachers" Institute. Practicing for Baseball. Buys More Land. Relnhold Harris has purchased 320 acres of land to add to his holdings on Weston mountain, from the estate of Jonas King. Echo, March 29. It Is reported that water has been turned Into the main canal of the Furnish ditch by the Inland Irrigation company, to test tle construction work, which was found to be entirely satisfactory. Mrs. E. E. Hutchinson and daugh ter are visiting with Mr. and Mr. F. L. Brundage, who Is a daughter of the former. Oliver P. Fleet Toung and wife were serenad ed by the Echo band at their home Monday evening. The young couple were married in Pendleton a short time ago. Mrs. G. Moore, who has been at Hot Lake for some time, has been taken to the hospital at Pendleton to recuperate. Work on the Hlnkle ditch is going forward with all poslsble speed. One of the men employed on the government ditch was quite painfully, but not seriously injured yesterday while at work along the' rock part of the work, one of the large chunks of rock flying up and hitting him in the head. C. S. Mudge Is arranging to open up a furniture store in Echo in the old hotel building, which will be remodel ed by J. H. Koontz, the owner, next door to the Miller grocery store. May Stop Here, Echo and Hermlston are making an t-ffort to have the business men of Portland atop here on their tour of eastern Oregon. It Is quite Important that the visitors be given art opportu nity to view the working of the Uma tilla project that they may kn jw what may be expected of this section of country after the water Is run on the land. It is more than probable that they will stop along the line of the project If It is possible for them to do so. Elks Are Back. Several of the Echo Elks who went to Pendleton last evening to attend the meeting, of the Elks and Initiation, returned home this morning There are two new Elks In town, who went In from here. They went through without a frown, say In; there was naught to fear, , ' - For Stealing Redd Inc. James Boyle was arrested yesterday for stealing bedding and different small articles about the government camps. He was given 150 day In the county Jail by Justice of the Peace Dorn. Cattle Shipments. Five or six carloads of cattle have been shipped out in the past week to different points In the west, and four carloads have Just gone out to The Dalles, where they will be killed and shipped on to the camps along the north bank railroad. They were all brouqht'ln from the Butter creek and Meadows country and were Hold at $4.60. Some cattle are being held on account of the short me of oars. The Montreal correspondent of the London Times Informs that Journal that of the 90;000,000 acres "t fertile land In the west of Canada the gov ernment has allotted 75,280,000, and has only 14,180,000 left. In account ing for this 75,280,000 acreir, the cor respondent says that In 1900 the crop acreage of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, with a population of 801. SZ8, was 7,283,719 acre.
