.UNION ,lfc.HABEl,
Rise up! How brief this little
day!
We can but kindle some dim
light
Here In this darkened, wooded,
. way
Before the gathering of night!
Come, let us kindle It The dawn
Shall find us tenting further on.
We know not where; but this we
know.
Night cometh on, and man needs
light!
Come, stir the embers ere we
grope
Yon grey archway of night!

NO MORE POOL SELLING.
The people of Oregon who have
been taxed to support the state fair
and who have seen that excellent event
degraded by the most inexcusable race
track gambling, permitted by the state,
will be delighted to know that the
state fair board has abolished pool
selling at the fair.
Gradually the silent but penetrat
ing sunlight of public morals Is spread
ing to the last hiding place of the
gambling germ and soon It will be able
to find no place whereon to lay Its
head. A dispatch from Salem an
nounces the decision of the state ag
ricultural board on the pool selling
evil, as follows:
The state board of agriculture at
Its meeting yesterday afternoon voted
to eliminate all gambling devices from
the state fair grounds. There will be
no pool jelling nor bookmaklng at the
Oregon fair this year. The radical
move Is one that has puzzled the
board for some time, but one which
they have weighed and considered
carefully.
In past years the commission has
been severely criticised for permitting
gambling on the grounds and the res
olutions adopted by various granges
In all sections of the state together
with the demoralizing effects of pool
selling among the young have neces
sitated this step to be taken by the
board. To the fair It means a great
deal financially, for the eliminating of
pool selling will cut the revenues $1,1
800, which was paid for the privilege
by William B. Aver.
The sentiment against gambling at
the state fair was manifested at the
recent session of the legislature when
the bill introduced by Representative
W. K. Newell of Washington county,
failed to pass by a few votes only.
Many fairs throughout the union
have eliminated gambling and have
profited thereby. In Minnesota the
state fair has grown Into a gigantic
enterprise, and by doing away with
gambling the attendance has made
wonderful strides. In Ohio, Iowa, In
diana, Illinois and other states pool
selling, bookmaklng and attractions
with objectionable features have been
removed.
NO FREE GRAZING.
The stockmen of Colorado are try
ing to have the grazing fee charged
for use of the range In forest reserves,
removed or abolished.
They will never succeed In this
underhung ' and they should not. If
grass were free In the reserves, why
not give the timber free to the saw
mill companies?
The central Idea of the forest re
serve system Is to preserve some
thing of the public domain, both tim
ber and grass, for the use of future
gene. ' as. It luuks forward to the
time when the country will have ur
gent need of these things, and the plan
It has adopted for the preservation of
both timber and grass, la to husband
them now by not permitting them to
be wasted. Impoverished or destroyed.
By Hm'tlng the number of stock In
reserves, the grass will not be destroy
ed by over-grazing. By selling off
only the ripe timber the f.rests will
be preserved and It Is right that those
who use either public timber or pub
lic grass should pay a reasonable price
(or them.
The rules governing the forestry
department are Just as legal and ef
fective as those governing the cus
toms department or the Judiciary de
partment and any public official who
will counsel disregard or violation of
these rules Is peculiarly unsafe as a
representative of the people.
The grazing fees are Just and equi
table an apply to all alike and the
government will not and should not
remove the fee. It would be a dam
aging precedent to do so.
A HLVRBERIXG BOODLER.
With death from consumption star
ing Supervisor Sanderson of San Fran
cisco, In the face, he is converted from
a gay boodler Into a blubbering coward.
While he was in good health and
on the high tide of adventure and
successful boodling, he had no thought
of the consequences of his crime, he
had no respect for the name of his
family and betrayed his fellow citi
zens Just as willingly as any other of
the supervisors.
But now that he sees the Image of
a lone white tombstone In a desolate
field as his Immediate portion, he
begins to reflect on the dishonor which
he has brought upon his name and
like a big calf he flinches under the
hot branding iron of public Indigna
tion.
Men should think of these things
when they are In good health and In
their strong, useful manhood. It Is
no time to try to make amends for
wilful wrongdoing, after the crimes
are all committed, the money spent
and the friends betrayed.
It Is the part of a coward to set up
a howl about a besmirched name and
a ruined family escutcheon, after a
man has run to the end of his rope,
willingly, wilfully.
He should have thought of these
things when the first bribe money
was shoved under his nose. It Is too
late now for effective atonement. San
Francisco has been wronecd beyond
recovery by these rascals and no death
bed repentance will restore her plun
dered honor nor bring back her
wasted public funds.
There nre always a few knockers
In every town and Pendleton, of
course, has a very small proportion of
this class, which Is always kicking
about the town going to the bad. Let
them go out to rent a good residence
or try to buy a good residence prop
erty and It Is safe to say they will
find that rents are Just as high and
prices are Just as high or perhaps
higher In many localities than ever
before. The street paving has actu
ally Inspired more confidence In the
city than any movement ever made
and Pendleton Is on a safer and more
substantial foundation today than
ever before In her history.

A BOLD DECLARATION.
The People's Press, tho new
weekly started In Portland, prints
as an excuse for Its existence the fol
lowing courageous creed:
Do you know of an untrammeled
newspaper In the northwest? Do you
know of a weekly or dally publica
tion that has standing, Is rightly ed
ited and that has no strings on It?
Don't you know as a matter 'of fact
that there are political deals, grafts
in municipal politics, queer happen
ings In labor affairs and corporate
doings that offend every honest man,
that are never spoken of?
Admitting that this is the situation,
and nr. man who Is Informed can
deny the general charge, Is it not
time that the general public have
some one Porum where then can be
-lire they can gain a hearing, where
the under dog can have his honest
hovl and where the exact truth can
be lold about the things that interest
every voter and taxpayer?
Knowing the field and Its needs,
and after a conference with represen
tative men of every class, we have
entered the field, not for art's sake,
nor to tell of the drama, nor to ex
plain why certain good people of
Nob mil have such good chefs, but
to tell the wayfaring man, though a
fool, the Inside facts about tho city,
cnnr.ty nnd state government, to
voloe the complaint of the common
poople, homely, tnxpaying, mere peo
ple and, so far ns in us lies, to fight
tholr flrht. We don't expect to be
literary nor to be esthetic, but we
believe have a year's work outlined
that will be worth while for the peo
ple cf this city and state to attend to
and wo much prefer to get down to
business, rather than to explain In
soothing phrases.
Mexican Lambs $8.
Mexican lambs made 8 again, but
they are In a. class by themselves,
says the Chicago Livestock World.
Fed western lambs of desirable weight
and quality reached 17.90, a range of
$7.60 7.85 taking the bulk. Lambs
with weight, even when carrying wool,
were slow sale. Shorn lambs made
$7.80, but $8.60 took good ones, and
the run carried a lot of fresh shorn
stuff, not fat, that had to sell down
as low as $6 and was not wanted at
that. These off-quality clipped lambs
are 30 40c lower. (Wool yearlings
of lamb weight made $7.25 and were
wanted, but clipped stuff was turned
down, $5.76 being an outside price.
Killers Insisted on a $1.25 S 1.50 dif
ferential on shorn stuff.

The second boy was more exact. Ila
