Twn steam shovels and en gines are on the side track and more machinery Is being shipped from the contractors" wovks near The Dalles. Work on the main cut at Wash turna will commence the first of the week. This cut will be 400 feet wide and 35 feet deep and It Is estimated that It will takii nine months to com plete It. The engineers are survey ing another line east of the proposed cut and if this is taken In preference to the old survey the cut will be much deeper. It Is not definitely known but It Is likely thnt the sta tion will be built near the mouth of the cut south of C. T. Booth's dwell ing houie. The contractors are experiencing considerable difficulty In getting mtr btt they expect a large force from The Dalles In the near future. Waslitucna Enterprise. Chewaucmi river, and the company :icrw to maintain all dams, ditches, main chnnucls, latterals, flumes and other works, which are to remain their property. No land can be sold until the ditches are built, and the company has been notified that they can st II land. This land Is entered und will no reclaimed under the Carey not, and the Interests of the settleis are snfe-guarded by the con tracts. LakevVw Sentinel. City Pound Is Expensive. It Is evident that the city pound Is not a paying Investment during the year Just closed, the receipts of the pcund were $11. while the expen ditures were 2824.60; $720 of this ex pense Is the salary of the pound master, who provides his own horse and polices the city for loose stock and dogs. It does not look exactly the proper thing to do, to make the people who do not own stock, pay taxes to insure protection from those who do. Instead of exacting the usual $1 to regain possession of stock Impounded, If the owner of stock, whe permitted them to become tres Uassers, was submitted to a fine of 810, possibly the services of a pound mater could be reduced to the mini mum, suy not to exceed two days' service In n week. a Grande Observer. (121.000 Irrigation Contract Another large Irrigation enterprise In central Oregon was launched last week, when contracts were entered Into between the stnto lnnd board and the Portland Irrigation company for Uie reclamation of a large tract of land near Paisley In Lnke county, the contract Involving the expend! ture of 8421,000. It Is estimated that the cost per acre of the Irrigation of this tract will be In. the neighborhood of $25, ns the proposed plans Include the construction of a large dam 80 feet hljjh, for a reservoir, fifteen mils? nl.ove the lands to be reclaim ed. Water will be taken from the Inventions Capitalized. Gus E. Wallin, the Pocatello In ventor, left on the noon train today for Hays City, Kas., where he will remain a week or ten days, and then proceed east to all the principal cit ies of the Pacific coast, where he will demonstrate the Wallin address ing machine and the various im provements on the Mergenthaler Linotype machine perfected by htm. He is accompanied by his wife and children, who will reside In Hays City. After a tour of the principal cities, and a thorough Introduction of his Invention, Mr. Wallin will return to Kansas City, which Is the head of fice of the half million dollar cor poration formed to manufacture the Wallin inventions, and arrange for the erection of a large factory. Since his return from a recent trip to Kansas . City, Mr. Wallin has been busy in the Tribune office working models of his linotype improvements. The Tribune machine is equipped with them, and the Wallin addressing machine is in dally operation In this office. Pocatello Tribune. . Deep Snows at Buffalo Mump. "If the Jumbo Isn't a mine then there Is not a mine in Idaho coun ty. That is my judgment." said E. M. Watson yesterday in discussing Buffalo Hump properties. "I learn that it Is the plan to re. ume work at the mine April 1," he continued, "and I look for a good sea son for the property.' Mr. Watson, who arrived In the city yesterday from the district, has spent eight years at the Hump. He is en route to the Metalline camp In Washington. "There is now m.ore snow In Buf falo Hump for this season than dur-J Ing any year since the camp was es tablished," said Mr. Watson. I would state the depth Is at least ten feet and perhaps it is twelve. I note that your rivers are high, but this water does not come from the snow In the high mountains. The i-Ibb Is due simply to the rains and the melt ing of the snow on the lower ranges. The present year will be a great one for milling operations in the Hump. I expect to see an ample supply of water extending entirely through the summer months to fall." Lewiston Tribune. You should he careful of your bowels when you have a cold.
