Will Be Taken Out to Reclamation Project Baptist Evangelical "Chap el Car" la at Hermiston One of Ten in the United states Much Building Activity Baker City Sends an Agent to Investigate Cement Pip ing In Use on Reclamation Project. Hermiston, March 45. It Is more than probable that Hermiston will b visited by the business men of Port land on their tour through eastern Oregon early In April. The newly or ganized commercial club has extended them an invitation and if It Is accept ed they will be given a. trip in car riages to the big dam, and they will have an opportunity to view the work ing? of the entire project, which Is now well under way, The building now under course of construction are going up at a rapid rate, and the depot will shortly be completed. Hermiston will make some rapid strides In the building line dur ing the spring. Cliapel Car. Hermiston now has what is known as a Chapel car, and strange to say, the name of the minister conducting services there Is also Hermiston. The car Is sidetracked here for six weeks. The car Is the property of the Baptist Publication society, and Is called the Pacific Coast car, belrtg 75 feet long and 10 feet wide, and Is equipped with living apartments for the minister and his wife. It Is moved from place to place and it is one of 10 In operation in the United States. Invertlgate Cement Pipe. Ira I Hoffman, city engineer at Baker City, was here recently investi gating the cement, pipes being used here for some work on an irrigation plant near Baker. Mr. Hoffman found that J. T. Whistler, government engineer in charge at Hermiston, was an old schoolmate who studied en gineering at the same time In Ohio, and he found also that S. R. Oldaker was an old-time friend. Commercial Club. A Commercial club has been organ ized In Hermiston with the following officers: H. T. Irvln, president; C. L. Morgan, vice president; O. W. Woter Ing. secretary; F. B. Hwayze, treasurer. John Rice, H. O. Newport and E. P. Dodd were elected members of the board of managers. The club has a membership of 79. Mining Promoter Here. Judge Thomas Burke of Baker City, a well known mining man and promot er, was in the new town a few days ago looking over the conditions In and about a Hermiston, and he Is very enthusiastic over the prospects. Echo, March 28.T-U Is understood that sheepshearlng machines will be placed in operation in this vicinity within a few days time. Jake Waten- burger, of Happner, has engaged to shear about 30,000 head In this sec tion, which does not include all that will be clipped about here. This plant will have a capacity of 16 machines this year. J. T. Hosklns has purchased two lota from J. H. Koontz. Instead of Koonta purchasing them from Hos klns, as mentioned in the correspon dence a few days ago. These lots were In Koontz's second addition to Echo. Considerable building is being done In and about the Echo country this spring, and the country Is progressing In every way. Oliver P. Morton, attorney for the reclamation service, is again in his office after an absence of several weeks at Washington, D. C. r;lre Club Enjoyed. The Pendleton Academy Glee club which appeared here Friday evening gave an excellent entertainment wnicn was well attended and highly appre ciated. Big Garden. The Page Ranch company, of which James M. Kyle Is manager, has com pleted the construction of three build ings on their land, and arrangements are being made to seed all kinds of garden truck, which will be looked after by a force of about 20 Chinamen, Vegetables will be raised In great quantities. The land was purchased under the Furnish project by Messrs, Kyle and Page as mentioned a few weeks ago. FFREEWATEH'S BUMPER CROP. Grent Increase In Acreage of Fruit Trees. Kreewaler, March 25. Farmers and fruit growers of this section are looking forward to a bumper crop 'his senson in Umatilla county, as they ure confident that no damage has resulted to the fruit crop from the cold weather of the past winter, and they arc looking forward to the lamest crop ever harvested in the Mllton-Freewater country. It has been fully two years or more since this section of the county has shown such promise of so good a crop of fruit. Tlds year the season has not been rrnJied, moderate weather pre vailing. Marked Increase In the acreage of bearing fruit trees Is being shown. Under normal conditions Milton and Freewater ship fully 500 carloads of frull per annum, which means fully $500,000 distributed among the farm er anr fruit growers. MORE LABORERS ARE NEEDED. Pilot Rock Band Will Give Open Air Concert. Pilot Rock, March 25. If the weather permits an open air concert will be given by the Piljt Rock band Easter Sunday, which promises to be one of the events of early spring. Miss Myrtle Shearer, of Falrvlew, Wash., who has been visiting with Pi lot Rock friends for some time,' will leave this week for her home. Saturday was clean-up day for Pilot Rock, and the town looks much cleaner than before. More Men for Railroad. Mr. O'Donnell, who has the contract for five miles of grade on the Pilot Rock branch of the O. R. & N., has been in Portland the past few days to transport some more men for the work. AS ? GAS?
